"filtered" Words On This Site

I would like to discuss what words "the filters" choose as replacements here. I think that, considering the nature of the website, they should use anatomically correct words if they are going to replace one word with another anatomical one. How do others feel about this? I don't like the use of the word "vagina" to mean the vulva. The vagina is an internal place not a catch all word for anything "down there" on a woman. The world, in general, often makes this mistake, and I find its perpetuation on an anatomy soup site like Laura's to be suprisingly ignorant and insensitive. Don't get me wrong... I LOVE LAURA'S. But maybe this one common error that is made by the ignorant world in which we live could be righted in this world of safety and acceptance.

I am hoping that my strictly anatomical use of words here does not end up "filtered" and changed itself because I think it is an important point. Other opinions?

Well, while I agree with you that we should be totally correct if at all possible, the word filter is not of our own design and I am not sure that we can do that much fine tuning.

I think if it was possibel for us to fix that issue it would already have been done.

But with this topic here our computer guru might look at it again and see if they have made any improvements, but I seriously doubt that they have.

Ok, I'm not telling anyone how to do their job or putting pressure on anyone, I just enjoy this technical stuff. :D Yeah I guess I had to revel the geek in me at some point.

Fine tuning depends on if the filter words are hard coded or stored in a database. If they are stored on a database and each post is run through the filter it's changeable by someone that has access to the database. If I where to guess there is a table in the database with a column for the offending words and a column with a word(s) to replace it with.

The key phrase there is if we have access to the database.

lol yeah, it's probably the root admins that have access. :D

Honestly though I'm not sure I see the problem with the filter in this case. I ran previews and the anatomical words that you find in typical sex ed are not filtered. Then I ran some slang terms and they are filtered which is just find by me especially the c word. I sure as heck wouldn't want it to not be filtered.

Dear please don't be affended. Remember not everyone has knowledge of the correct names for all the parts. I don't even Know if I could get them correct. I'm sure that no one mean any disrespect. ;)

To be perfectly specific, myself and another member were PMing about the use of words and what is offensive, what has been reclaimed, that type of thing. I TYPED THE C-WORD. It was me. And it came up "vagina". I took offense at the inaccuracy of the replacement word.

So many words in our modern dictionaries are rooted in slang. That's why Oxford honours slang with its placement in their dictionaries (with that condition applied: "slang"). Attitudes to certain "hot topic" words often change over time and become a part of everyday language.

But I would way rather NOT see the "c" word in a post than have the "c" word in my PMs turned into the correct word "vulva". So carry on

You aren't going to like me after my answer but to be truthful...

It is Laura's forum and therefore I think she has the right to replace any words she likes with what she wants. Any replacement is for the good of the site and to protect Laura herself from any angry parent who might come across words they find offensive and could use againts her. I think little inconveniences like this isn't a big deal and shouldn't be treated as one.

As an administrator I do have access to the word filter. In fact I have added several words to it personally. You all must remember that this a G-GP rated site and we sure don't want a host of angry parents pulling their 13 year olds out of here. The word filter will stay in place as is and should the need arise, more words will likely be added to the list. There are plenty of adult sites out there that will accept gutter talk so feel free to visit them. I can assure you all, that vulgarity won't happen here.

As a side note, Laura usually doesn't take kindly to suggestions such as this.

That's what I tried to say in my last post! I'd rather it stay the same than see these vulgar kinds of words in post! And it was not "gutter talk". It was an intellectual discussion about language. And I just wanted see if there could be an interesting discussion on the point. I'll keep my trap shut from now on.

Anatomically correct words such as vulva, uterus, ovary, labia, penis, testicles, etc, are not filtered. Only lewd and crude slang versions of these words are passed through the filter.

Just for clarification.

Paula. How did your soup turn out? I bet it was delicious.

I made a post recently that mentioned D.ick Cheney, which, of course, came out as penis Cheney.

 You took offense that you couldn't say the c word and instead it replaced it with the anatomical word instead? In what use where you trying to use it that the proper word was not correct? I'll be perfectly honest, the c word is highly offensive in my opinion. I'm just not understanding why you feel the need to use a derogatory slang term.

My first encounter with the word filter was the day after Petra Jane had spent most of the night fending off an attack that was trying to shut down the site so i went into panic mode.

Imagine my surprise to find that Richard Van Dyyke Show had become penis Van a small levee Show and Herman Melville's classic novel had become Moby penis! :o

But I was told about the word filter after sounding the alarm to all of the other moderators who already knew about it.

 I'm also kind of confused what the original point of the post was ...is it that the "c" word is censored anatomically incorrectly?

anyway...yeah, i preview all my posts now, ive caught some strange things that word filter does....lol

The point of the original post was that labia are not vaginas.

While some people are literally living and dying over such details, I thought that the distinction mattered. I was clearly incorrect.

There is enough words in the English language not to NEED to use certain words. I understand it may not be a correct filter - maybe it will be fixed in the future(when the Admins feel the need and on their own time?). For now, though, I think people do have enough tact to get around it.

I agree with Zabrak.

However, isn't every single post on the website previewed by a moderator? Couldn't the cases of improper substitution (such as Mr. Cheney) be fixed there?

Well, here's the big questions:  What does it mean to be masculine?  What does it mean to be a woman?    I've been around a lot of rule-bending in those areas.  There's all sorts of "traditional" views about what men and women do.  Men work on mechanical things, defend/protect, earn a living, play rough sports, etc.  Women cook and clean, are gentle and nurturing, value aesthetics over function, etc.   Yet, my very "masculine" industrial-manager husband cooks just as well as any Betty Crocker wannabe, and tells the bedtime stories that are most in-demand by the kids.  My GF, who is surely "ALL Girl" is a highly skilled mechanic, a street racer, was busily laying concrete while 6 months pregnant, and practices kenjutsu (Japanese sword fighting skills).  And me?  I'm AFAB but I'm infertile and I feel like I should have had a male body...yet I possess very little in the way of "manly" skills or desire to acquire them.  I'm in my boy form these days, but pretty much useless for accomplishing "boy stuff."     I think my family blew those definitions out of the water.  Yet, somehow our family structure is also religiously patriarchal....and happily so!  It'll bend your brain to try to figure that one out.    I'd say its just important to be you, do what you do best, and stick your tongue out at anybody who doesn't like it.

Welcome to the board gizgizgizzie! I sure can understand what dysphoria feels like. I found it stayed in my head during nearly all waking hours. Although, sometimes held in a little deeper. But it was triggered easily. I hope you can find that place you feel comfortable with yourself. This is a good place to find help as you traverse your journey.   Jennifer

hi everyone, my name is giz (or gizzie), i use all prns but i prefer they/it and i just found out abt this place pretty recently !! im really excited to find community among other trans people from so many walks of life !! in my personal life, i do have trans/queer friends but its not easy to navigate that without coming out all willy nilly (and i can't come out to my family, pretty much ever) so this is a pretty good place for me to get to know people and make new friends !!   i also have this weird dysphoria issue that i feel like everyone (and society at large lol) is attaching me to categories and boxes that don't really fit me (obviously this is to do with my agab) so being here without that presentation is also really helpful !!   i also hope to be able to start and share my transitions goals and things like that (just getting my body to a more androgynous look) !!   thanks for reading, and i hope to see more of y'all soon !!

Well, my friends are out publicly. Openly transgender, and on HRT.  I agree that the survival of all of us is at stake.  But I think there are threats greater and more dangerous than those faced exclusively by LGBTQ folks.   Rising prices. Unaffordable food.  EPA strangling transportation and energy.  Needless foreign wars that put us at risk of literal nuclear annihilation.  A government that wants to tax us, track us, and control every aspect of our lives...including using us as guinea pigs for their medical experiments.     Trump is no savior.  Neither is the Republican party.  But I believe that a vote for Democrats in the federal government is for sure a vote for globalism and what follows it.  War, famine, plague, slavery, and death don't care if we're trans or cis.

People who are out publicly, and openly transgender, maybe on HRT, having changed names and gender, have a lot to lose if anti-trans politicians take power.  They have openly called for our eradication, and promise to do everything they can to accomplish this.  (again, 2025) For someone in this position the election is about our survival.  It's foolish to delude ourselves into thinking "Oh, they don't really mean that.  It's all for show," or, "There's other more important things to concern ourselves with." Maybe for some people the other things take priority.  But if you have skin in the game, things look different.
    • awkward-yet-sweet
If that happens, a lot of things I don't want to see might also be codified into law.  And some things that shouldn't be law might not get repealed.  To me, progress in one area isn't worth the price we'd have to pay in several other areas.     For me, voting on LGBTQ issues always ends up as an "out of the frying pan, but into the fire" sort of event.

Thea, your post made me think of a comic named Chloe Petts whom I saw recently on Hannah Gadsby's Gender Agenda comedy special on Netflix. She is a cisgender masculine lesbian. She is brilliant and so funny. I was intrigued by her identification - specifically masculine, not butch. And it seems to me there is a difference.

Today I had a dr appt. When I checked in, I was asked my surname, which I gave. Apparently there were two patients with appointments at that time with that same surname. The receptionist asked, "Are you (my legal name which is feminine) or Paul?" I got such a kick out of it not being assumed I had the feminine name.
    • Vidanjali
That must have felt affirming, albeit perhaps weirdly so. However, I'd construe that more broadly (no pun intended) as sexism rather than misogyny where the latter would imply contempt. Also, incidentally, I've heard chivalry referred to as "benevolent sexism".

My boss is in a panic. His business is a couple straws away from breaking a camel in half. He's just handling the stress very poorly.   My dad, though. He's handling things pretty well, as long as I continue to don't get massively offended by being called: son, boy, etc. His eldest is leaving the State and looks so different than he's been used to over the years. I haven't told him I'm on HRT, but to be fair the changes haven't been massive. I've always had boobs, more so after COVID weight gain and made more obvious with its loss, but now I'm not hiding them--and obviously wearing a bra. The estrogen has done some work, but nothing major (sadly). I think the biggest HRT changes have been my skin and a mild amount of fat redistribution.   Today I'm wearing my cheater, I almost have cleavage! :D I need to get another t-shirt bra to keep a good rotation. I only have two, one push-up, and the rest are unlined (great for Summer, but not great for my Summer wardrobe ).
