Looking For Someone To Sing To

Working on my voice quite a bit a the moment and as well as tapes I find singing helps quite a lot. The issue is I would like to do this to good music ^^. Now I tend to like punk/emo bands such as billy talent, my chemical romance, fall out boy, dashboard confessional etc. The issue is that whilst many of the lead singers of these sorts of bands have quite high pitched voices, none of them are female.

Basically im asking if anyone knows of any decent emo/punk bands (or any other genres really) which have female singers and would be good practice to sing along with.

Thanks in advance :)

Try Paramore. www.youtube.com and search "paramore misery business." I'd link directly to it, but I don't want to risk getting banned because of some words they use in the song. It's a great song. If you want, you should watch/listen the one titled "Paramore Misery Business Music Video (HD)." Why? Her hair looks cool and the three guys she is with are hot.

Amanda Palmer, lead singer of the Dresden Dolls, perhaps? She actually has a pretty deep voice, but she can hit rather high notes if she wants to. She might be a good intermediate step. :)

Although he's male... I found it very helpful to sing to Ronnie Radke's music in Escape The Fate. He has a very femme voice in many songs, and has also pretty much mastered the girlish "lilt" at the end of his sentences.

Another good song is one I just found thanks to my BF; "Sweet Dreams (are made of this)"- mostly the 80s version but Marilyn Manson's is ok too. I just spent the past like 2 hours singing the lyrics to that in the girliest voice I could manage XD.

Maybe a bit before your time, for some of you ladies, but I've had the greatest success singing along to Karen Carpenter. She has a wonderfully clear, crystal voice, and her range is fantastic. Great exercise for your voice, and lovely! I'm fond of Superstar, and Top of the World. Give it a try!

Find yourself some Ann Murray, she is a Canadian and sings alto. She has a fantastic voice and range. For sheer range try singing with Marty Robbins, also Ella Fitzgerald (one of the great female jazz singers), and the Andrews Sisters. That should get you started

That's not within your style, but may be worth a try (and who knows, maybe you even like her): Tarja Turunen is a Finnish soprano singer with an incredible mastery over her voice. If you manage to handle her songs the way she does, voice shouldn't be a challenge anymore. For most of her career she's been the lead singer in Nightwish (a symphonic metal band), this might help to find her music (but since 2007 the band has a different singer, so you might need to double-check that you are actually listening to Tarja... after one or two songs, there won't be room for mistakes). Among the themes I know, Over the Hills and Far Away stands as a great voice exercise: it ranges from quite low on the strophes to high-pitched on the chorus (there are many versions of that song, make sure you get Nightwish/Tarja's one, otherwise it will be pointless for your purpose).

If you happen to like this kind of music, I migth suggest some other female metal singers; but since it's not the style you asked for, I'm just posting about the most challenging voice I know.

Hope this helps

Regards,

Ethain

For today's sound Paramore. Gotta love the look too.

I can nearly hold my own singing with Ann Murray, but then years ago I sung the same register; now I have to lock in on it again. The Andrews Sisters have way too much range for me.

@LadypcnjI'm sorry. I know the feeling my mom thinks I'm going through a phase too although I didn't come out till April 17, 2023, so it was later in life. I was in denial majority of my life. I would love to hear more about this if you are comfortable sharing more of it.

I love fashion. I have over 100 dresses and 74 pairs of shoes. My walk-in closet is full of other clothes as well. I'm getting more shorts soon. SHEIN is awesome for quality and price. Just when you get a leather coat from them it's just the shell not the liner. Most of my shoes are from Torrid because I wear size 13 women's.

Unfortunately Oklahoma is about as bad as Texas but definitely not as bad as Florida. Especially as a minor!

I'm sorry @Ladypcnj I can only sympathize with you on that. Therapist on the other hand is crazy. I have had 16 in 10 years. It sucks having to have to go over things. I will say though after 6 therapists I didn't have to explain my history they simply read the history.

I don't use it.   One of my daughters gave me a little to experiment with, but I haven't.  My youngest tried to put some on me once, but I din't like it.  The light was pretty bad admittedly. My ex didn't use it, and my daughters didn't use it much either when they were still at home.  (If so it was very subtle) And I don't often notice it on women my age (mid 70's)   I shave every day.  But my beard is not heavy, and essentially grey, so it's not real noticeable unless you get close with good light.  I was starting to look into electrolysis, but the pandemic hit, and I just kinda dropped it.   Sometimes I do wonder about it though.

It's something I'm just learning but I find I actually enjoy the 'craft' of it in addition to how it makes me look. Even after a fresh shave, I have a mild 5'clock shadow. For me, the primary use of makeup is to get rid of that. I'll start with the orange concealer over facial hair areas and a bit under my eyes. Liquid foundation over that and light concealer used judiciously over that (still dialing that part in). Then just a tad of powder to bring color back in certain places. There are a number of Youtube tutorials on that layering process.    I'll also pencil in my eyebrows a bit since they're blonde and otherwise not very visible. Sometimes I'll get adventurous and give mascara a try but that's a delicate skill and usually I mess it up. I don't particularly like lipstick, but just ordered a 'lip pencil' to experiment with. Hoping for a more subtle effect.

Sunday is my weekly ablution day - all of the parts that need occasional shaving get their required attention. The weather is rainy and cool today so after the ablutions and shower, I put on blue jeans, a gray t-shirt and a black front-zip hoodie along with gray sneakers.   And, I did put on make-up, not to impress anyone but just to feel as if I'm looking my best....as good as that can be given this woman is now 69 years old.

There are lots of us here willing to offer support, ideas, a shoulder or just a smile. Working with your therapist and finding your true self can be difficult process...but it will also be filled with wonder and joy as you discover that person who's been waiting inside you to be found.   Just know that you are not alone.

Thank you KayC!  I am just trying to keep breathing. I don't have a huge amount of time in my life for self exploration.  My job and responsibilities have me second guessing all my inner work.  I do have time off in the summer - coming up soon as I am a teacher.  Only a few workshops.  Looking forward ward to some introspection.     :) Mealaini
