That would be "Silent Running," an outstanding movie of a quieter nature than most sci-fi's.

Thank you Carolyn, yes it is silent running. I saw a documentary of how they made that. The robots were paraplegic folks in styrene covers. That movie was so cool! I loved the outer space ATVs too. "Valley Forge, Valley Forge..." Jody out!

Just a couple of interesting comments here from someone who lives inside of the movies - The original Star Trek movie was only the second Sci-Fi movie directed by Robert Wise, the first was 28 years earlier - The Day The Earth Stood Still.

Sorry JJ, not only could Queen's soundtrack not save Flash Gordon but neither could Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin of Aboria, Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan of the Hawkmen in Sky City or even Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless - it seems that nothing can save a movie from producer Dino De Laurentiis.

Alien - My favourite all-time film. I think it is just perfect, and im actually more attracted to the sci-fi element of the film instead of the horror. I have actually had dreams inside the world and mythology of Alien. Also love Aliens, my favourite film as a child, but Alien 3 is more mesmerising imo. It's a flawed film, but I find everything about it to be more interesting than Aliens, ie. acting, direction, set design, score, tone, etc.

Bladerunner, The Terminator, The Thing, Brazil, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Akira, Videodrome, Children of Men and the original Planet of the Apes would round out the rest of my Top 10 sci-fi related films, with Aliens & Alien 3 not far behind them.

Maybe it was the crossdresser in me but I liked that movie. Mainly for the wild outfits and settings. Yeah, the plot was thin and the effects were substandard but there were some hot costumes that I would love to fit into!

I went to the early showing at 7 PM. The movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is showing at The Heights Theater in Crystal, MN. That would be a 20 mile drive for me. At the price of gas around $3.85 a gallon, don't think I will go.

I recall that Close Encounters (if I remember correctly) came out around the time that Star Wars did. It seemed that SW was robbing all of the thunder and I felt bad as I believed that whole compelling mystique surrounding alien contact and government cover-ups was (and still is) a sizable obsession in the world. And though I cannot say that Spielberg revealed where all the bodies are buried, he simply tackled a topic dear to my heart.

And of course this was the first film to ever be rereleased under the heading of a "Director's cut".

Not Star Wars I, II, & III?

Resident Evil, sure, Think about it: Mary Shelley is given credit for inventing science fiction with Frankenstein, which amounts to a scientific attempt to diddle with a human (albeit a dead one) going awry. Resident Evil is a bit more scientifically advanced, what with the 'T' virus, but it amounts to the same thing. Dr. Frankenstein would have loved the NEMESIS program!

Underworld? Not sure. Both vampirism and lycanthrope are organic issues, i.e. viruses not grown in a test tube. However, the vamps use some serious science in their endless effort to stay on top of the situation.

And when you come right down to it, there's Kate Beckinsale, so who cares?

Here is a good one from the old days - 20 Million Miles To Earth - it stared William Hopper (Paul Drake from the original Perry Mason series) and featured the special effects of Ray Harryhausen.

There were a number of movies that featured his special effects - he was the king of stop action photography taking over from the first master - Willis O'Brien (King Kong, Mighty Joe Young and all of the sequels).

Of course they just remade Total Recall and it, too, was taken from a Philip K. penis story. The original title was 'We Can Remember It for You Wholesale'.

Personally, I find his titles cutesy and his prose unbearable. His ideas, however, inspire others to make good movies (or in the case of Blade Runner, magnificent movies!)

As to the title change (Electric Sheep/Blade Runner) not sure why, but in the closing credits they mention that the name of the film was suggested by William Burroughs. I'd love to hear how that came about.)

ok, too hard to choose.. my first instinctive answer was.. those old cheapo sci fis, the ones that are so bad they make you laugh.

on the other hand..there's a lot of really good sci fis..some are more like the teats with your conception of reality thing, others are, the type that make you jump when the commercial pops on, and look behind the doors..

the old sci fis sometimes didnt have thr best effects,, sometimes youd never see more than a shadow..but they worked with that suspense thing till youre nuts... not like later where they just show everything, whatever it is. sometimes the things you can think up are much scarier than the ones hollywood comes up with.

Sounds to me like your ready to savor a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 marathon.

Now if you'll invite me, I'll bring popcorn plus regular butter, caramel butter, & garlic butter. Also Milk Duds, which are the perfect 'one box will last the entire movie' candy. And with my mouthful of new dentures (& the crowd goes wild!) I can really savor sticky candy now.

"Cloud Atlas," which I keep thinking has something to do with cloud computing. It arrives in theaters on 10-26, and I plan to see it. Any movie directed by a transwoman is going to get my attention.
