Desert Island (music Edition)

Not to take away from the "Desert Island" thread going on in the Books forum, but I thought it be fun to do this with record albums.

Okay, so you're stuck on a desert island for five years.. and apparently with a five years years supply of batteries for your CD player. You can pick up to five albums to take with you (2xCD albums are okay, but let's not get out of hand with box sets and what not).

What would you bring? Here's mine:

1. Prince: Purple Rain

2. Ween: Paintin' the Town Brown, Live '90-'98

3. Dresden Dolls: [self-titled]

4. Hawkwind: Space Ritual

5. DJ Rap: Learning Curve

I'm very, very interested to see what the rest of you think. I love picking people's brains when it comes to music! :)

Serious reply (it was 'tempting'- something like 101 sound effects w/o waves or palm trees swaying - but I didn't do it)

Deep Rock: In Da Gadda De Vida, Iron Butterfly - or Fragile - Yes

Light Rock: Beatles White Album - or Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Country: Trio (Linda Rhonsat - Emilou Harris - Dolly Partin) - or Folsum, Johnny Cash

Bluegrass: Let the Circle Be Unbroken, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - or O' Brother where Art Thou soundtrack

Classic: compiled collection of Mozart - or Amadius soundtrack

Notice how I kinda cheated? :o

Woww am I getting old? - some of that stuff is from the 60's ('cept Mozart of course) :P

Oh my - I LOVE that album - I didn't know anyone knew about it. If you like that (sound like an Amazon Books lead-in) you might also like the soundtracks to "Sleepless in Seatle" and "You Got Mail"

[Ooops 'CD" I mean - although my copy is actually the original album I guess - so is my Tapestry, and I also had it on 8 track, yikes - time to go get the CDs]

and for all the "Lost" fans out there.... we could add cd's of music from that show, just for the sake of irony....

Personally, I'd divide into two mix-cd's -- one of songs played ON the island, and one of songs played OFF the island. If something was played both on AND off, then we'll include it on the cd where it was first played...

In episodic order:

ON the island:

Driveshaft's "You All Everybody"

Joe Purdy's "Wash Away"

Beatle's "Strawberry Fields Forever" (actually not HEARD, but lyrics are tattoo'd on Charlie's arm)

"Guitar Tremors Song" (played by Charlie when he's going thru withdrawals)

Georges Bizet “Intermezzo"

Charles Trenet - "La Mer"

"Itsy Bitsy Spider" (sung by Charlie to the baby)

"I Got You (I Feel Good)" (James Brown's song sung by Hurley to the baby)

"Monster Eats the Pilot" (sung by Charlie as Claire cuts his hair)

"Redemption Song" (Bob Marley's, sung by Sawyer)

Cass Elliott - "Make Your Own Kind of Music"

Billy Joel - "Easy Money"

Slim Smith - "My Conversation"

The Drifters - "Up On The Roof"

Patsy Cline - "Walking After Midnight"

"He's Evil" (the Kink's song, sung by Charlie)

Pousette-Dart Band - "Fall on Me"

Perry Como - “Papa Loves Mambo”

The Glenn Miller Orchestra - "Moonlight Serenade"

The Duke Ellington Orchestra - “Just A-Settin' and A-Rockin’"

"Coconut" (Harry Nilsson's song, referenced by Hurley)

The Seeds - “Pushin’ Too Hard”

Les McCann - "Compared to What"

Otis Redding - “These Arms of Mine”

B. B. King - “Chains and Things”

Petula Clark - “Downtown”

John Philip Sousa - "The Thunderer"

Corey Harris - "I Feel Like Going Home"

Brenda Lee - “I Wonder”

The Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations"

OFF the island:

Patsy Cline's "Leaving on Your Mind"

Willie Nelson's "Are You Sure?"

Blind Boys of Alabama, "I Shall Not Walk Alone"

Perry Como - "Catch A Falling Star"

Damien Rice - "Delicate"

Dave Mathews Band - "Stay"

Staind - "Outside"

Davis Skeeter - "The End Of The World"

George Jones - "I'll Share My World With You"

Kasey Chambers - “Hard Way”

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - “Voi Che Sapete”

The Glenn Miller Orchestra - "Moonlight Serenade"

Femi Kuti - "Eko Lagos"

Ann-Margret - "Slowly"

Felix Mendelssohn - “Wedding March”

Sarah McLachlan - “Building A Mystery”

Three Dog Night - "Shambala"

Wreckx-N-Effect - “Rump Shaker”

The Hollies - “Carrie Ann”

Oasis - “Wonderwall”

Nirvana - "Scentless Apprentice"

Bonobo (with Fink) - “If You Stayed Over”

Olivia Newton-John - “Xanadu”

Giacomo Puccini - “Un bel di vedremo”

Yeah, I'm a "Lost" junkie... what gave it away?

OK, 5 CDs Get ready for Eclectic.

Tears of Joy - Don Ellis (World's greatest and strangest big band)

Orchestral Music from Wagner's The Ring - Herbert Van Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic

The Complete Works of Simon and Garfunkel - (I have to have one box set - I'm leaving the James Brown behind!)

Frank Sinatra The Capital Years - (OK, Two sets - skipped the WB years - I might play New York, New York and fling my CD player into the ocean)

The Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert - Alumnae of Maynard's bands over the years.

So many Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears, Earth, Wind and Fire, Asia, Bily Joel, Doc Severinsen, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Tommy Dorsey, George Straight, Glen Miller and John Williams left behind! And none by one of our own - the former king now queen of the mighty Moog Synthesizer - Switched on Bach by Walter/Wendy Carlos - transitioned at about my age.

Love ya,

Sally

I don't think i could settle with just five CDs, but i could settle on five mix CDs. The problem is that not every song on an album is as good as I want them to be.

Argh my album collection was massive...left it in California...if I've made the CD's they'd be MP3's and 5 would hold MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MUSIC...but I'll forego consuming mass quantities here...so

2) Roy Orbison Greatest Hits (white double album)

3) Electric Ladyland-Jimi Hendrix

4) whatever lands closest to me face up after being thrown up in the air together-The Beatles-'65, Help, White Album, Let It Be, Sgt Pepper, Something New, Abbey Road, Revolver,Rubber Soul...(ha ha ha the EMI Box Set???..bzzzt...not allowed)

5) Velvet Underground-Loaded-anniversery edition

What happened to The Velvet underground's Banana cover and having the Beatles on Apple label? You might get hungry!

I might have to trade in the Simon and Garfunkel for Gustav Holst's The Planets - Nemae Jarvee conducting the Scottish National Symphony.

That is so true. To be honest, my CD collection is awfully dusty. If I bother to get anything out it's probably vinyl, the rest of the time it's mix, mix, mix. Half of what keeps me sane living alone is having my computer on random repeat during all waking hours!

Hey, why don't you share a mix with us? If you feel like it. I love hearing about people's musical tastes! :)

Oh, totally on the MP3 CDs. They get my nomination of most underrated audio media ever. Well, maybe not ever, but they sure are useful. If this stranded thing was for real, I'd be going with five MP3 CDs and, what?, something like 40 hours of music.

Would you believe I've never seen an episode of Lost? Not for lack of interest, in fact quite the opposite; I get too addicted to TV shows and have to "meter my dosage". Heehee. :) But I've got season one hanging out on my hard drive and one of these days I'll queue it up.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I love these mixes! That's so cool, did you compile them yourself? I'm going to cut and paste these to my todo list for my next downloading/mixing spree. :)

I see a pattern emerging in favor of Lou Reed. If this went to 10 CDs the banana cover album or Transformer would be on there.

I also dig the respect for soul and country and classical and a few other flavors. Nice, very nice.

Emily --

Lost has to be watched from the very first episode, and without missing a single episode. It's unfolding like a very complicated novel, with new "main characters" introduced at random and other "main characters" turning out to be trivial to the core story. Major plot lines hinge on subtle clues. It's totally addictive.

The song list I posted are actual songs used in the show -- someone else compiled the list on one of the MANY "Lost" fan sites (Lost exists almost as much on the web as it does on TV, but you can get the whole experience just watching the shows in order). I've tried to indicate places where songs were actually performed by original artists (Cass Elliot's "Make Your Own Kind of Music" becomes a pivotal plot device), where common popular songs are performed by cast members as part of the plot (Jack and Sarah playing "Heart and Soul" on the piano) or where a song is simply referenced. Finally, "You All Everybody" was written for the show, and becomes an important plot device.

I doubt that helped any.... LOL

I'd surely be sick of any five albums that would have to sustain me for five years. In such a case I'd be more likely to write five albums of my own to record the instant I'm off the island. But since we're playing the game...

Kaddisfly - Buy Our Intention; We'll Buy You a Unicorn

Damiera - One (This is an EP, really, only 16 minutes long, yet I never seem to tire of it)

Oceansize - Everyone Into Position

Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory

Grüvis Malt - Maximum Unicorn

Yes, that's two unicorns on board. A mere coincidence.

Got a new Granddaughter this morning.  Mother and child (and father) are doing fine. This makes 7 granddaughters and one grandson.  I have 2 sons and 6 daughters myself.  And then I  switched teams.  I think this stuff runs in the family. Another hard day for the patriarchy.
    • Ivy
Like @MaeBe pointed out, Trump won't do these things personally.  I doubt that he actually gives a rat's a$$ himself.  But he is the foot in the door for the others.   I don't really see this.  Personally, I am all in favor of "traditional" families.  I raised my own kids this way and it can work fine.  But I think we need to allow for other variations as well.   One thing working against this now is how hard it is for a single breadwinner to support a family.  Many people (I know some) would prefer "traditional" if they could actually afford it.  Like I mentioned, we raised our family with this model, but we were always right at the poverty level.   I was a "conservative evangelical" for most of my life, actually.  So I do understand this.  Admittedly, I no longer consider myself one. I have family members still in this camp.  Some tolerate me, one actually rejects me.  I assure you the rejection is on her side, not mine.  But, I understand she believes what she is doing is right - 'sa pity though. I mean no insult toward anyone on this forum.  You're free to disagree with me.  Many people do.   This is a pretty complex one.  Socialism takes many forms, many of which we accept without even realizing it.  "Classism" does exist, for what it's worth.  Always has, probably always will.  But I don't feel like that is a subject for this forum.   As for the election, it's shaping up to be another one of those "hold your nose" deals.
    • Ivy

I was thinking in particular of BLM, who years ago had a 'What We Believe' section that sounded like they were at war with the nuclear family.   I tried to find it. Nope.  Of interest https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/aug/28/ask-politifact-does-black-lives-matter-aim-destroy/   My time is limited and I will try to answer as I can.
    • Ivy
Well, I suppose it is possible that they don't actually plan on doing what they say.  I'm not too sure I want to take that chance.  But I kinda expect to find out.  Yet, perhaps you're right and it's all just talk.  And anyway, my state GOP is giving me enough to worry about anyway. I remember a time when being "woke" just meant you were paying attention.  Now it means you are the antichrist. I just don't want the government "protecting" me from my personal "delusions."
    • MaeBe
      1.  I think there are some legitimate concern.   2. Thoroughly discussing this will consume many threads.   3. I disagree partially with @MaeBe but there is partial agreement.   4. The context includes what is happening in society that the authors are observing.  It is not an isolated document.   The observation is through a certain lens, because people do things differently doesn't mean they're doing it wrong. Honestly, a lot of the conservative rhetoric is morphing desires of people to be treated with respect and social equity to be tantamount to the absolution of the family, heterosexuality, etc. Also, being quiet and trying to blend in doesn't change anything. Show me a social change that benefits a minority or marginalized group that didn't need to be loud.   5. Trump, if elected, is as likely to spend his energies going after political opponents as he is to implementing something like this.   Trump will appoint people to do this, like Roger Severino (who was appointed before, who has a record of anti-LGBTQ+ actions), he need not do anything beyond this. His people are ready to push this agenda forward. While the conservative right rails about bureaucracy, they intend to weaponize it. There is no question. They don't want to simplify government, they simply want to fire everyone and bring in conservative "warriors" (their rhetoric). Does America survive 4 year cycles of purge/cronyism?   6. I reject critical theory, which is based on Marxism.  Marxism has never worked and never will.  Critical theory has problems which would need time to go into, which I do not have.   OK, but this seems like every other time CRT comes up with conservatives...completely out of the blue. I think it's reference is mostly just to spark outrage from the base. Definitely food thought for a different thread, though.   7. There are groups who have declared war on the nuclear family as problematically patriarchal, and a lot of other terms. They are easy to find on the internet.  This document is reacting to that (see #4 above).   What is the war on the nuclear family? I searched online and couldn't find much other than reasons why people aren't getting married as much or having kids (that wasn't a propaganda from Heritage or opinions pieces from the right that paint with really broad strokes). Easy things to see: the upward mobility and agency of women, the massive cost of rearing children, general negative attitudes about the future, male insecurity, etc. None of this equates to a war on the nuclear family, but I guess if you look at it as "men should be breadwinners and women must get married for financial support and extend the male family line (and to promote "National Greatness") I could see the decline of marriage as a sign of the collapse of a titled system and, if I was a beneficiary of that system or believe that to NOT be tilted, be aggrieved.   8.  Much of this would have to be legislated, and this is a policy documented.  Implementation would  be most likely different, but that does not mean criticism is unwarranted.   "It might be different if you just give it a chance", unlike all the other legislation that's out there targeting LGBTQ+ from the right, these are going to be different? First it will be trans rights, then it will be gay marriage, and then what? Women's suffrage?   I get it, we may have different compasses, but it's not hard to see that there's no place for queer people in the conservative worldview. There seems to be a consistent insistence that "America was and is no longer Great", as if the 1950s were the pinnacle of society, completely ignoring how great America still is and can continue to be--without having to regress society to the low standards of its patriarchal yesteryears.

Cadillac parts are pretty expensive, so repairing them costs more.  But they don't seem to break down more than other makes.  Lots of Lincoln models use Ford cars as a base, so you can get parts that aren't much more expensive.    My family has had good luck with "Panther platform" cars.  Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Marquis, Lincoln Towncar or Continental.  4.6 V8 and 5.0 V8.  Reasonable fuel economy, and fairly durable.  Our county sheriff's office was running Chargers and SUV's for a while, but has gone back to older Crown Victorias for ease of maintenance.  GF rebuilds them here.  But they are getting more scarce, since the newest ones were made in 2011.    1992-1997 years were different than the later years.  1998-2001 they did some changes, and apparently the best years are 2003 to 2011.  Check Craigslist, and also government auctions.  GF has gotten a lot of them at auction, and they can be had in rough-but-running shape for around $1,000.  Ones in great shape can be found in the $5,000+ range.  Good for 200,000 miles without significant rebuilding.  Go through engine and transmission and electrical systems, and they go half a million.    Some Chrysler models are OK.  The 300 mostly has the same engines as the Charger and Challenger, so parts availability is pretty good.  But they tend to get timing issues.  The older Chrysler Sebring convertibles were pretty reliable, sometimes going 200,000 miles without tons of problems, although after that they were pretty much worn out.

I think I have read everything the Southern Baptists have to say on transgender, and it helped convince me they are dead wrong on these issues.  They can be nice people.  I would never join an SBC church.

You come across as a thoughtful, sweet, interesting and pleasant person.    There are parts of this country, and more so the world, where evangelicals experience a great deal of finger wagging.
