Speaking a Gendered Language...

Recommended Posts

Hi
My first language is very gendered. Every name and most of adjectives have a specific gender. Sun is male, Chair is Famale, Events are males, Situations are females and so on. Sometimes it's frustrating, but i'm kinda used to it.

Anyone in this forum in my same situation? It is frustrating or stressful? Have you found any way to solve the problem at least partially?

A gendered language and often world view has often been difficult for me as well.  In english while we don't always give different objects a male or female identity we do use the male gendered pronoun for many important all inclusive things.  As an example God is always he.

As to how to change those things...... i cannot.  What i can do is simply accept convention and try to let it go so it doesn't bother me.

Language does change but the pace is very slow.

Hugs,

Charlize

I think English as a language is mostly implicitly gendered and seldom an issue. In some other languages words can be gendered which is often a pain for people learning. I tend to browse things on different sites so come across things from one extreme to the other. I suppose my view is that someone whose primary language is gendered would likely not really know any different, at least until they reach higher education?
