Hrt

It's been three weeks from today since my therapist went on vacation. Since then I have had my first laser hair removal session, meet two sisters in real life, and going to my first support group session the same day as my next therapy session (Oct 10th). I think 11 out of 12 sessions is close enough to three months. In addition to talking to my therapist about how I want to come out to my parents and sisters I want to ask her for my hrt letter. My therapist had asked my when I wanted to go on HRT a week or so before my last session before she went on vacation and if she asked me again right now my answer would be just as soon as you can get the letter written.

I still have a week until that session though. :( These last three weeks have been like torture waiting. I mean yes I met some wonderful people and accomplished a lot but the one thing I want so much was put on hold for a month and it sucks.

In general how much should I expect to pay for the prescription and doctor's appointments to get checked out so I can get on hrt?

So sorry about the waiting, Honey.....I know how that feels!

But to your question....

If you have no insurance, WalMart is a great place for your prescriptions...

First off, the things that are most commonly given for HRT are on WalMart's list of meds for $4...YAY!

Most likely Estrodiol and Spiro!

If you don't have a WalMart available, a couple of the drugstore chains also have the $4 type plan!

If you have to pay for them your self it's most likely $50-$100 a month anywhere else!

And the doctor...Well, Hon...that is a hard one.....

Doctors fees vary greatly and if you go to an Endo it will probally be higher.

But the blood tests every three months can be a little costly....check your doctor's prices...

Do you have a Doc picked out yet?

If you have the resources ...it can't hurt to shop around for a Doc.....

Hope this helps some, Sweetheart!

A GP can prescribe for you...That's what mine is...

I have CareFirst Bluecross Blueshield PPO for health Insurance and CVS Caremark for getting a discount on prescriptions from CVS through work for free. :) But will my insurance cover the prescriptions?

No I don't have a doctor yet. I'm not even sure who to look for. I will ask my therapist if she knows of a doctor that she usually recommends. She's the person that has guided me to most of the logistical places I've needed to go to so far. What is a GP? I don't have a lot of experience with doctors.

Honey....my insurance pays for my HRT...they just don't know the reason....

Mine won't cover "Sex change" (crude, I know) but, my doctor codes my paperwork as "Hormone imbalance" and it goes through just fine!

Sorry...

GP is "General Practioner" a family type doctor!

An Endocronoligist is a Doc that deals in things like Diabetes and hormones, but, they are a specialist and more expensive!

But check your insurance...they may be covered!

Hang in there, Baby...it's gonna be fine.....I'm 8 months in and once you get over the hump of getting started, it's all downhill from there!

I hope so.

Just 8 more days just 8 more days just 8 more days *mantra*

Just out of curiosity if a person is intersexed would heath insurance cover the srs then?

Medicare hasn't covered mine, but my cost is pretty nominal for out of pocket.

About two hundred every six months is doable. But they do cover all my doctor

visits,costs me not a penny.

I don't think I qualify for Medicare just yet. $200 for six months is defiantly doable.

How long does it take for HRT to start kicking in?

Like everyone said here, mileage varies. However, it's really not that bad. A few notes:

Spiro: I pay $35 for a one-month supply. I could probably get it cheaper, but I am lazy by default. :)

Hormones: I get mine through Azano Health (I think i spelled that right.) I pay $35 for ten doses, which lasts for five months.

I have my doctors visits, hormones, and spiro covered under my perscription drug plan. They are listed as "hormonal imbalance" and "high blood pressure" on my records with insurance companies, and I haven't had trouble yet. My biggest, fifty-foot-tall-burning-letters advice would be to find an endo who is also a GP doc -- trust me when I say that its a lot easier to talk about medical issues with the same guy/gal that's turning you into a girl. ;)

The "doctors and insurance will spit in your face" meme is only slightly blown out of proportion. There are docs, and the docs will take care of people. Any doctor who is not for your care is not so much your doctor as they are an expert looking to bilk you out of money. Keep that in mind.

I hope my therapist feels the same way. It would make my day if I asked for it and she just had it written up in her desk already. :D I would probably then pester the hell out of the doctor until the doctor saw me, like a little child at Christmas who wants to open the presents at the crack of dawn. Hey Unsure

Here's a couple of sites on Laura's that explain herbal anything.

Here

Here

If you want more you can go to the home page and enter "herbal creams" into the google search, there is 3 pages of info.

But basicly yes, herbal anything is complete rubish and Laura's does not advise the use of them.

Do the smart thing and go through a qualified doctor, otherwise your risking your money and life.

Reminds me of that episode of the cosby show, I think it was Rudy, got this cream to rub on her breasts and it was supposed to make them grow. When her parents found out, Dr. Huxtable said she'd get the same results spreading mayonnaise on her chest. So....maybe you could try that? It's most definitely cheaper hehehe.

(Kidding, don't do that)

I just got back from seeing my therapist and I feel like I am all smiles. I told her about the support group meeting I'm going to tonight and about Amanda and how she is like a big sister to me. The best news is we got on the discussion about hrt and she told me she gave me a break down on the general pricing of it (omg expensive!) and a doctor's referral. I still have to wait a week for her t draft up the letter. So I should have the letter this coming week or the next. Then I can make my appointment with a Dr. Mark Sklar who is located in DC. So maybe by this time next month once the check up and stuff (darn waiting lists) is done I might be on hrt!!!!!! :D

Has anyone had any experience with Dr. Sklar?

I had to push my hrt appointment back until January 8th because I had a money shortage in November. :(

The good news is I got my laser facial removal package fully paid yesterday. It turns out they give a discount for trans people so they took $130 off my bill. :D So now I won't have any issue paying the doctor's bill for the hrt appointment on the rescheduled day of January 8th. Especially since that is pay day for me and I'm sure to have the cash in my checking account that morning.

So 24 days and 9 hours until the doctor's appointment and then the long wait through the weekend and however many days into the next week for my results until I have my prescription and can start hrt.

Hi all, a bit more about the story - I just realised the first message didn't tell you much! It's called 'Going Out', set in the UK, and it's by me, Nicola Atherton, if you search Amazon. Have a little read of the first two chapters which are there for free in the 'Look Inside' bit. It's a lovely long read, a gradual, detailed, emotional story which I’m sure some will find at times painfully raw, while at other times unbearably exciting. I wrote it for us lot :) It starts off as a gradual, realistic intro into Amy’s solitary world, before she accepts what she’s always known to be true. She makes friends with girls and meets men, and her story plays out in a way that others have said they enjoyed very much. I think you'll all love it :) PAPERACK copy.pdf

Wow! Hopefully that encounter is amicable! I can only imagine what might be going through your mind right now!   I was a bit of a prude, I don't even need a whole hand of fingers to count my sexual partners on. Good old fear-based Catholic "sex ed" did its number on me.   I get nervous walking into men's rooms. I don't look the part for the either restroom these days, I guess. I did use the women's at the convention I volunteered at (the restrooms were temporarily made gender free though), it was nice having a stall to use without waiting.   The whole bathroom debate is so stupid. Genital-based restroom assignments aren't going to stop people intending abuse and there are laws for handling them already. It's the fear the laws strike and the conditions they creates is the problem, fomenting distrust and hate. Who cares who is in the stall next to you? Let them pee in peace!

Good morning! Just finishing my delayed coffee after fasting for routine bloodwork.   Just had my annual physical and I came out to my Dr. He was so kind and said if/when I want to start HRT they have a couple endocrinologists who specialize in transition and he could give me a referral. So nice! Not quite ready to jump into that yet, but he was so understanding. Another small step in my social transition. I feel so happy! 😊

I am ambidextrous. I learned to write righty in school so I usually write with my right hand but my handwriting is better if I use my left hand. I use a lefty mouse. I am physically stronger in my left side.

Easy, I have felt the same way, not quite to the point of wanting to quit but sitting there one dosing morning and thinking "what am I doing?". I am in a crazy place right now; family is moving across the country, I am being laid off for the first time in my career and have to find a new job, and I'm in the middle of this gender journey that seems like it makes everything harder than it could be. I'd always been a "man with boobs", even when I was in my 20s and really skinny I had breast tissue, and now I'm accepting of that and want more but in a different way--I don't want to be a man with boobs, I want something different. I am something different, but it's hard because of nearly a half-century of social programing. So I empathize with your struggle, very directly.   I haven't dressed "male" for nearly six months and I just volunteered at a conference with my femme nickname and she/her pronouns on my name lanyard. The whole experience was great, I didn't feel a minute of anxiety or worry. That stuff comes at home, when left to my thoughts. Which is more telling? The comfort being Mae in public or the doubts and worry in private?   When I look in the mirror and see this more feminine me, it calms down the doubts and worry, so I'm starting to allow myself to trust in the former.
    • Lydia_R
Totally!  I started HRT 21 months ago.  I'm 53yo now.  I mostly did not want the feminine genes of my family to take me over.  I told my doctor I wanted athletic breasts.  She has kept me on fairly low doses and I'm avoiding progesterone so far.   It's mostly mental for me.  Taking the pressure off from not having erections is soothing and changes my thinking.  I just want that stuff gone.  I had fun with it, but I'm over it.   I'm extremely happy with what has happened with my breasts.  Perhaps it took more than a year, but they have a feminine, athletic appearance now.  I don't notice changes in the rest of my body.  I've always enjoyed being thin and straight and have no desire for curves.  I can dig that butch with a feminine touch look.  I was upset at cutting my hair, but I'm liking it now.   It's fun to see all these young transwomen in my environment.  Everyone has their own style and the younger generation has a style of their own compared to us older people.   OK, back to baking a pie and doing some knitting....

The time I spent "on the street" was mostly in the woods.  I dislike cities.  Even now my "bathroom" is out in the back yard, and has been for years.  When you're used to it, it's not so bad.  Helps one keep up with the seasons. I have no desire to live on the street in a city. Most of my adult kids live in cities.  It's nice enough for a visit, but I still prefer the country.
