This was a question from a google job interview

You have eight testicles all of the same size. 7 of them weigh the same, and one of them weighs slightly more. How can you find the testicle that is heavier by using a balance and only two weighings?

1. Take the goose over

2. Go back

3. Grab the corn

4. Swap the corn for the goose

5. Swap the goose for the fox

6. Go back

7. Take the goose back over

First he brings over the goose. He drops it off on the other side and goes back. He gets the fox, drops it off/picks up the goose. Then he drops the goose at the original side, takes the corn to the side w/ the fox, goes back and gets the goose.

Another victim of the "naughty word" filter. A few of our members were using the word ball,s as a crude slang word refering to that part of male anatomy meaning testicles. As a result these few have ruined the use of a perfectly legitimate word for all. I would advise all to "Preview" their posts before submitting them. If this were done, these embarrassing moments could be avoided.

It does make for some hilarious moments, though.

I'm with ya there... it depends on the definition of a weighing. Assuming a weighing consists of physically switching, uh, 'testicles' between the surfaces on the balance it can be done by:

1. Place 4 on each side

2. Take the 4 from the heavier side and place 2 on each side

3. Lift one from each side. If the balance evens out, the one in your hand from the heavier side is the correct one, otherwise it's the one still on the scale.

If that counts as 3 weighings, I can't think of a way.

Hi Sam

Your Google poser is melting my head. Closest I can come up with,

4 orbs (hehehe) on each side of the balance , the heaviest orb will be in

the group of 4 which outweighs the other. Discard the lightest 4. Split the

remainder and put two either side of the balance , the heaviest orb (hehehe)

will be among the heaviest pair, discard the lightest . So now ,Sam, 1 of the

remaining orbs in each hand and the heaviest will be obvious , dadahh, viv :)

This whole thing however seems to rely on the premise that if you left a fox unattened on a river bank that it wouldn't run off.

I feel like I'd be more worried about the goose running off because hypothetically a fox is smart enough that you might be able to train it up a bit. But once you had your fox trained up, presumably the first thing you'd have trained the fox to do would be to not eat your other stock, in which case the question is moot. B)

Seven total right? 000000O

Three on each side - leaving one out. If they perfectly balance the one out is your target - end of test.

So one of the sides will be heavier probably. You know your one you left out is normal. [if 000 - 000 = balanced, then O is theone left out! YEA!!!!!!]

So you take the heaver side - three right? divide in two and one - add the known to the one. [if 00O and 000 = unbalanced, then 0 left out is a known and 00O has the target] - YEA!!!

If the side that is heaver has the one you know is normal, then it has the target. If the other side is heaver, one of those two are the target. [00 and 0knownO = unbalanced - YEA!!!!!! - solved]

BUT the 0o on the 'unknown side? YIKES!

Pick one . Lie. Say this is the target. You have a 50-50 chance of being right.

If the judging person says WRONG it's the other one? Say -"AHAH! That is what I 'meant' to say!

Grinnnning like a fool!

Lizzy

Actually you do as shown above but remember you have knowns already - so you end up with a unknown0O possibly - but to solve that dilema, you remove the one of the unconfirmed - replace it with a known BEFORE the final weight test. If that side is unbalanced yo have the target. If they balance both sides, to had removed the target

WHEWWWW all that without using that censor prone word!

HEE HEE

WAIT - Eight? NEVERMIND!

Lizzy, its 8 orbs, not 7 hun. viv.

DARN

Okay - weigh three and three. If balanced - weigh the two taken out - solved.

If unbalanced, take the heavy three - divide in two and one - take one out one of the two side unknowns at random and replace with a known, add a known to the other side, reweigh. If either is unbalanced - take out the known - solved! If they balance - the unknown one you took out is the target.

Better?

Actually, that is impossible without doing something 3-D or being able to connect lines from one house to the next. I worked on it for a while and became convinced of it, then googled and sure enough everyone says the same thing.
