I was so stressed, upset and angry. I turned down my promotion to Senior Chief Petty Officer and retired.

This is when I really was at my end and starting to realize things about me and started becoming honest with myself and my feelings.

I went in in 1982, boot camp at Great Lakes. I did 4 1/2 years at Groton but was not on subs, visited subs while there but never went out on one. In my 24 years only had 1 sea tour on a destroyer. Rest was shore duty. Retired from Groton in 2006.

1978 to 1982 US Army Reserves Para Legal. Ft Jackson to Ft Carson. Orders for Viet Nam, heart attack, just kidding and so were they. Sent to Germany for 2.5 years. Got out and joined the Army Reserves for 4 years. The service was one of the better things I've done in my life. I still find myself getting emotional when I meet wounded and injured vets across the street at the Harry S Truman Veterans Hospital. Some of those guys and woman gave so much. Kathryn

US Army Reserve Drill Sergeant 2009 -2012. General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions

I regretably quit showing up for the Reserves and got a General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions. I was dealing with too much mental and emotional stress and ceased all contact with my unit. I was constantly debating suicide every night and day since leaving Active Duty until the beginning of this year. I was too afraid to talk to anyone or tell anyone about my depression or gender dysphoria due to the fact I did not want to get the Baker Act imposed on me.

US Navy 2003 to 2008 as a Religious program Specalist. Spent 2 years with the 3rd marines out of Okinawa and 2 years doing admin work in Bremerton Washington. I didn't enjoy it at all but if I had to do it all again, I likly would, good life experiance in the end, plus now I know its not for me

Well, I was in the Air Force from Nov 2005 till Sept 2008, although I was in the DEP for 2 years previously. I was 2A6X6 Aircraft Electrical & Environmental tech, I was stationed at Elmendorf AFB from June 2006 till Sept 2008 when I was discharged for BS reasons, if you care to hear them, I will get in to them when I am not so tired! Needless to say I was discriminated against by my 1st Shirt (and not for the obvious reasons, that I know of). Stuck me with a General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge. Completely screwed my education benefits, but at least I kept my VA access.

I was a terrible sailor but an OK boxer.

It's a shame my 'things' were discovered during an inspection and they didn't like me dressing in hotel rooms on liberty.

That sent me to the hospital and after a few sessions with a shrink and some tests by a psychologist I was transferred to Great Lakes where I was honorably discharged due to pre-existing condition.

I boxed in smokers so I could get those weekends. Punched the lights out of a few marines. My father put me into PAL in order to make a man of me after he'd tried everything else to stop me from dressing. Those boxing lessons may have saved my life. White boxers were a valuable commodity. If my stuff hadn't been so publically uncovered I believe I would have been allowed to stay, as long as I kept covered, and jabbed with accuracy, in the ring.

The GI Bill put me through college and helped us buy our first house.

I loved and still love America. Hope the services really do become more accepting.

Well, I wasn't full time, but I was in the Minnesota National Guard from 2002-2008. I joined my Junior year in High School, and went to training in Ft. Sill, OK. I guess my reasoning for joining, was that my older brother was in it, and that I felt I needed to do something that would make me out to be a 'man' which obviously wasn't the right solution for me. I did enjoy my time in though, even if it was only part-time, plus it was certainly a learning experience one way or another.

Canadian Army, through military college from 1986-1990, completed armoured officer training in 1990 and served with my unit, including a Bosnia tour, until 1994. Did a Masters degree in England, then served at NDHQ (think Pentagon) until my release in 1998.

USN Attended boot, "A", and "C" GSM schools at Great Mistakes Naval Training Center and was medically discharged right before heading to be part of the commissioning crew for, at the time, a new Arleigh Burke class destroyer.. At the time the name of the ship had not been disclosed but just from the timing I have a good feeling it was the USS Cole.
