Name Change

So after having gone almost full-time (i pretty much just change clothes now when I see my parents) I have decided that nothing should be stopping me from legally changing my name; however, I'm not so sure what it is that I need to do. I know of a website with information state-by-state, but I'm originally from Louisiana.

If I'm just changing my name, do I need to do it in Texas or Louisiana?

On top of that, they makes it sound like getting the name change in Texas can be hard to do. Is that so? They listed the name of a lawyer that can help (Phyllis Randolph Frye), but I don't want to have to pay a lot of money for this. I couldn't afford to spend too much right now.

So does anyone have any experience in texas?

Wish I could help. It's pretty straightforward here in Canada. We pretty much just need a letter from a qualified therapist, and fill out the forms and pay for it. It's not even that expensive. I think it's around 140.00 or so.

I went to A&M with her when she and I both were playacting male. She is a bit pricy though as she has a thriving practice. There are others in Houston, let me ask Vee, my post op friend who she used in Houston.

Also - I think in Texas it's a court order while in Louisiana its a form that has to be notorized and submitted for a judge's signature.

Well, since I've lived in both places, could I do it in either? How does that work?

Having a lawyer for a name change is not absoutely necessary...

Look on the net ...google LA and TX...

They have kits and you just fill out the application..and they will file the papers...

Google is your friend!

I had my name and marker change done February of last year.

Laura Renee had her name and marker done just a few weeks ago.

Different lawyers, same out come.It takes 500 dollars to get it

done right and as painless as possible.Save the money and do

it the right way.It is money well spent for the way it changes

your whole life from that day forward.I know it had that effect

on my life.I am no where near the person I was a little over a

year ago.Having that wonderful F on Everything, made it so I could

be as girly as I wanted to be,freed me to go Anywhere without fear.

I am a woman, and have the drivers license and documents to say so.

It changes your whole life dramatically.

So I say,Get it Done and Do It Right.

Are you pre-op or post op? I've read that the sex on a driver's license and birth certificate could be changed without SRS, but I figured it would just be cheaper and easier for me to get the name change only. It sounds like your license says female, though, and that just sounds awesome. If it would only take me 500 dollars to legally change my name and my sex... I would do it. I could save that money in the meantime while I wait for hormones.

I tried PMing you for help, because I can see that we live in the same state and, therefore, have the same laws governing us. But it said you can't receive any more msgs. I'd like to get to talk to you one on one... PM me? Reach me on Skype? AIM? Facebook? Exchange phone numbers?

LOL thx in advance

LOVE YOU

I'm doing some digging, myself, and I came across this site, TexasCounties4U. It has a helpful and adorably cheesy video about the process of getting your name changed in Texas. I'm sure you've already found the Harris County site, but I'll link to it anyway. The District Clerk is Loren Jackson, and the application for a change of name certificate is under the "Family Forms" tab.

Wish my county's site was that organized. =)

Excuse me. . .You need a note from a 'qualified therapist' just to change your name? Whatever for? Now granted I am going by a different name but have not decided whether or not I want to do it legally.

So, you need a therapist to begin to transition and another to change your name. . .what next?

For my name change I mainly needed the doctors notorized note stating that I had been on hormones for how ever long and that it had permanantly changed me. Also they used the little reason of that it would be in my best interests and the publics and my mental state so I would not be in any mental angish if any used it to hurt me in public.

Well, since I've lived in both places, could I do it in either? How does that work?

Well in actuality you can choose to change your name in any state you like. All you need to do is satisfy their requirements for residency which for some states are very easy. For instance I was born in Michigan but now live in Washington State. My id is now from Washington and here it is a very simple procedure to change ones name. You simply have to fill out an application and then make a brief appearance in court where the judge performs the technicality of asking you about your change. All he said to me was to check to see if they had the correct name I was going to change to and to make sure I wasn't changing my name to evade the law. It took a total of 5 minutes and I was out of there. Then I simply went to my DMV and changed the name on my license, went to social security administration to change name there and sent a certified copy of the name change order to my home state to have my name changed on my birth certificate. It cost me a total of approximately 100 dollars in total to change everything.

If changing your name requires a lawyer in Texas I would check what is involved to do it in the surrounding states.

Name change on the birth cirtificate I believe is possible without surgery. The only 2 things currently prohibited federally until post op SRS are B.C. and S.S. gender marker change. I know in Cali both of them state that you have to have irreversable surgery for the gender markers on those docs and records.

Well I have been absent recently due to my new hobby of computer gaming. I have worked on a collection of NES, SNES, N64, Sega and now revamping up my PlayStation 1 and 2 collection and then will get Xbox original. My computer isn't powerful enough to run Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games. It's fun to see the old games that I grew up with.

It's truly bizarre, the changes that have happened over the years. Larger houses on smaller blocks of land which means less trees because there's no room for them, so less shading and the resultant need to run air-con harder, which adds to suburban heat sink, which results in higher local ambient temperatures, which results in increased air-con use. Vicious circle.
    • Ivy
I don't have "air" here, so I pretty much live with what Mother Nature gives me.  Fortunately, there are trees in my yard which helps in the NC summer.  Windows and doors open all summer - closed up in winter. I do have fans, ceiling and windows. When you think about it, everyone used to live this way.

I cannot say that I have. As much as we hope that love, compassion, and therapy help, sometimes opening ourselves up to individuals who later to out to disingenuous, results in worsening of the original trauma. In addition, it may provide a secondary trauma. I have experienced this first hand, and it has left me hardened more than diamond or titanium. There is an emptiness that grabs you when you have been betrayed for innocently opening ourselves up, only to find someone who has went behind your back, and tried to destroy your life.    As for therapy, well, for some of us it works I suppose, until we either run out of money. Insurance is often not useful. There are many "counselors" who will not accept the insurance payments, but will willingly charge much more. When my counselor unilaterally decided to increase charges from 130/session to 180/session, I said enough is enough. I survive, sometimes despite myself. I have paid a fortune out of pocket for everything, and have no illusions about it. If I did not pay what I paid, I would not have received the services including the counseling. Transactional? Yes. I already knew I was transgender. That little gift will exist until my last heartbeat occurs. I will endure because I want to, and because my job/profession benefit others.    It was hard enough coming out later in life. I knew it would be hard. If I had a choice, would I choose to be transgender? No. If I had it to do over again, I would never tell a soul. I would take everything to the grave with me.

Good question, when it comes to love, the trauma from past makes it hard for me to know wither someone really loves me or not. My therapist suggested that I embrace my femininity more, due to my past trauma held me back from doing so and forgive those who mistreated me.

Hi MaeBe, good question about the T fighting back.. things to keep in mind for some of us who are on the E, levels may respond differently which requires a treating doctor to monitor both the T and E levels, there might be other test work to be done as well. I don't know what my T levels are, except I have a hormone imbalance. Oh yeah, I use the oral type of E not the shots, my treating doctor plans for me to use the patch form of E later on.

Good morning everyone,    Just when I think the crate and potty training is going well. Parker has decided that the laundry room is a good place to do his business. He rings the sleigh bells at the back door to go outside to potty, has not made the connection to needing to do his business. He is only 10 weeks old and still very much a young puppy.    On another note the rest of my world is going well, and off schedule. The only way I know what day of the week it is by looking at my phone. @Willowand @awkward-yet-sweet my wife and I keep our house on the cool side holding the thermostat on 69° F year round. We also have ceiling fans moving the air in each room. She even sleeps with an additional isolating fan in her bedroom. I think that one is more about white noise than cooling. I’m glad central Indiana is in a moderate temperature zone allowing us to experience distinctly different seasons.    Hug,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well I've been surviving at least that is something. Heading to visit the oldest and family tonight. Haven't seen them since before xmas. I just wish they would come visit us. None of them have seen the inside of the new house. We are going on 2 yrs. I know it is an embarrassment for my son to come visit his parents. Until they moved back to WY our 4 yr old granddaughter has never stepped foot into WY.   Since the wife left early for work. The puppy thinks he needs up early too, so up about half hour earlier than normal. Which maybe good as I (and maybe our youngest) am heading to a cars and coffee in Cheyenne this am. Even taking the wagon, which I was able to get the transmission fluid changed yesterday. god what a PITA that was.   Well off to see the wizard shortly. TOTO, where did I leave my gingham dress?   Hugs, Kymmie

Good morning    @awkward-yet-sweet you’d be plenty warm at my den. Wife keeps the temp between 76 and 78.  If I turn on a ceiling fan I get “do you need that fan on?”  I sleep best in a cool room snuggled up.   have a great day. Hot here!  Oh I went all the way in the pool yesterday it was nice.   Willow
