Any Distance Walkers?

I have arthritis over most of my body so losing weight and exercising are two things doctors always preach to me. Last year I did a 13k...all walking. This year I'm registered for a half marathon in early Oct. I'm a little less than 12 weeks out so I started my training program a few days back.

Plus I'm kick starting it with the Special K diet-A cup for breakfast and lunch and a sensible dinner. Can I just say after a few days on this that the person who invented the cup is an idiot?

Now I have to walk a fine line between pushing too hard (pretty sore lower back and ankle today) and not getting good training in.

That 13k was an awesome experience. It was 95% women who walk near the back and everyone is very supportive plus women (and a few men but overwhelmingly women) who have finished stick around the course and support the people coming up the back.

I want to some day do a full marathon.

Karen I am not much of a walker but I do like to run. When I work out I usually run two miles and then come back in 30 minutes and run more. I would love to do a 1/2 marathon. I would even love to walk with you during one. I think I could finish that way.

Good Luck and I hope you are able to do one.

A wonderful topic! Yes - I believe in walking - always have - once was a bicyclist until I went to the emergency room after a crash (my fault) to have my lower lip sewn back on. So I took up backpacking until I noticed it was a lot of work going DOWN as well as going up - go figure! - grin (actually the people I went with graduated to expensive canoe trips and I dropped out).

New Orleans in the Quarter is a pedestrian' paradise. I like to walk it on the weekends - about 20 blocks square! I wore out Sally this weekend and all we did was go in for a late lunch! HA - I will eventually get her accustomed to 5 miles without a problem - and in the Quarter you have so much to see and do - plus the people are so much fun to watch!

This weekend, Christian Evangelists (youth and chaparone) were touring the Quarter - hundreds of them - blue shirts, green backpacks with Jesus Saves and a cross on the back - sorta a give-a-way. They were in 'gaggle of geese' groups. checking out the sinners. Sally and I were right there in the midst. They didn't see us. So they will go back to Cambrige, Ohio.. Butte Butt, Idaho... Sweetwater, Texas... all those Bible Belt places - "NO - didn't see a single 'abominable' transsexual person." And we were right next to 'em... abominating every chance we could get!

So yes - walking is great. Now you have made me want to google in my area! Gotta be some events here Sally and I can see about joining! That is - if she ever recovers from this weekend!

Yes, Hon....I also have arthritis over most of my body, too...

But, I've already lost the weight and have kept it off for more than 5 years....never again!

I can't run, though...

I have two artificial hips and I just can't get going...even if I try, I fall down...so it's walking for me...

Older thread, but thought would add to it.

Walking is the best medicine in my opinion. I do 5 miles about everyday on a course that first drops about 400 feet in elevation, then I go back up the hill. Takes me about an hour and a quarter to do this. I wear out shoes fairly often however. Small price to pay for such a huge benefit. Been doing this for years now, I love how my legs feel and look. My weight has been very steady recently

I just did a rough estimate of my daily commute to and from school and work, without any side trips and not counting moving between and within buildings on both campuses (which is a lot of stair climbing, btw).

2 1/2 miles.

I also run 2 miles twice a week. I'd do more, but breathing problems prohibit it. The sound of me gasping and coughing is unpleasant.

I saw this concert in which it is said that the famous phrase of Jon Landau "I saw the future of rock and roll and his name is Bruce Springsteen" comes from that night. By the way Bruce opened for Bonnie Raitt that night and she was the better performer . . . just sayin'.

Astronomy and astrophotography.  I have done a few public presentations on the subject and could most likely wing it for an hour without putting you to sleep.   On the other hand if you need a sleeping pill, I could also talk for an hour about flying and you'd be out cold.

Please consider joining us, even if it's just for a few minutes to see what the meetings are like. I've learned so much, had so much fun and gained confidence in myself just by being a part of this amazing group of people. It's a low key, no pressure, non-judgmental chance to just be among people who are supportive, understanding and affirming of each other.    I'm travelling out of state and still planning on dropping in for awhile.    Come see what it's like!!

Thank you, Susan!! It was such an amazing experience for me. I can't remember if I even talked about it on a Zoom meeting.   Here is the link to the post I made about it. And, again, thank you for helping to give me the courage to do it.

Good morning coffees   This probably doesn’t exactly apply to me because you wouldn’t have found a more shy and conservative person than me.  I was perhaps less shy before my sister started complaining about me doing things that were hers to do. And I would become embarrassed and that was the end of that.   upstairs unit got their typical weekend visitors in the middle of the night last night.  They woke me up.  They have little consideration for being in a condo community and the neighbors being in such close proximity.   @awkward-yet-sweet , how goes the job with your husband’s boss?  I don’t recall you saying much about it this week, but I could have missed a post along the way.  If I recall you were supposed to meet with him last Monday.   @KymmieL I hope you are feeling better.     Yes, I find it to be wrong that just because a car part says Ford or Chevrolet on the box that same part with Lincoln or Cadillac on the box cost a lot.more.  I know there are differences in the upscale brands such as the engine and drivetrain in the Caddy and of course the interior fit and finish.  But it’s the same body with things crammed in the same way under the hood.     well, time to finish my coffee, fix my hair and made my way across the street to work.    willow

I read about her this morning. What a shame! She was beautiful and it seems she had a strong support system in place and could have had a wonderful life all to have it end like this. Such a waste. I truly hope the monster that killed her gets everything he deserves.
