Coming To My Oldest Son

Well the pressure of having no one inmy family know anything became too strong. Today I had a conversation with my oldest son (he is 23 and is a senior nursing student). I agonized over every word I said to him as I gave him my life's history in 5 minutes. Then I finally said it, "Iam transgendered." I told him how fearful I have been about being rejected by my family and his response was;

"I'm ok with that."

You could hear the pressure cooker leak its steam in the next room, psssssst as the pressure just faded away. I now have someone I can occasionally talk to at home while I let the time go by for a slow and gentle exposure to the rest of the family.

What a relief. I am floating on cloud 9 today so sorry if my optimism offends anyone, but I refuse to let go of this feeling any sooner than I absolutely have to.

Optimism and happiness are always welcome here!

Congratulations on your coming out to your son and acquiring a confidant and supporter. My daughter was cool with it rom te moment I told her and has stayed my biggest supporter.

In addition to that, when your child reacts that way it is such an affirmation of your parenting! (Not that it is a failure in parenting when out children reject us-there are hundreds of influences responsible but when they are accepting it IS because we have against the odds managed to raise tolerant individuals)

i know it's great up there on that cloud and I hope you never have to come down!

OMG, Sharah! That is so wonderful to hear. I am happy for you, and very proud of you. I wish I could give you a big, real hug right now.

I do know how fearful you must have been, and what a joy and relief it was to get that kind of reaction. I had the same experience with my

son not two months ago, and he gave me the biggest hug when I told him how afraid I was of losing his love and respect.

John is right, your son's reaction is in great measure a testament to how well you've raised him. You should be very, very proud.

One of the larger parts of peace is being able to share your load with someone that you can touch...and family is an extra...

You can talk here to all of us, but the personal aspect of being face to face with an accepting friend or relative is powerful...

Ny girlfriend at work was my confidant for a long time and it was great to be able to share a story, a hugg and a knowing smile...

      I do spoken word acting, and give Trans 101 talks and other public speaking.  I wear make-up for those occasions.  Sephora is easy for me to get to, and has a foundation that does a good job for me and the sales folks there are Trans Friendly.  Their eye shadow pallets are also fun to use. Another source of my foundation is Ulta which carries Dermablend that does a consistent job of my lower face and chin.   I just use good old Revlon lipsticks because I ruin them by leaving my purse in the hot car too often.

      I'm not interested in makeup, jewelry or nice clothes or girly stuff.  It's made me wonder at times.   It saves some money.  If I wore a skirt it would likely  be denim.  I thought about a woman's skirt suit but nah.   Neither of my sisters are into that stuff either.  One likes peasant chic (still a 60s flower girl)  and the other - the only time she has ever worn a dress was at her wedding.  Jeans at all other times.   Jeans and t shirt here.  Content being a girl.  Weirdo. Weirda? Never mind.

      I really don't think that's a good idea. The unity of the LGB and T community is historic and has been central for both groups rights. And the vast majority of people advocating for splitting the two are transphobic LGB's who are broadly condemned by the community anyway.
