Do You Play Games As Your Opposite Sex?

For the longest I was an avid DnD player and for most of the time I played as male. I wanted to play as female but the only males that played females in any game I played in played them as very promiscuous women. I just couldnt bring myself to do it. When I started playing role-playing online, the persona I made was male so I mainly stuck with male characters. I was able to arrange to play 3 female characters though. One I took over and she was already made, the other two were males that were turned into females. I just recently "started" playing WoW and I made a female character. I made the character on a friends account and computer so only played her the one weekend. In the future I will probably play more female characters if the opportunity presents itself.

I almost always play as female, I tend to find it suits me better. I spent most of my life making changes to it, to be free of male bondage, so always rolled as a female. Its a kind of escapism, to be able to role play in a world where you are accepted as a woman with out question, (even if it is within a game world). These days I still play as female toons, because I generally like the game play better anyway. I only play male characters if there is no customisation present in the game. Lots of girls play as male toons, they just like watching their butt's running around for hours on end instead of a female one. For me though its better playing as female, as I generally answer the dialogues in these games as I would do in the real world, so its not so much roll play, but really just me representing my personality on the game itself, playing the game how I would like it to progress. Seen lots of discussions about this on different sites, some ended up in trolling, its nice to come across a more mature debate about this :)

I used to play females exclusivley if i had the choice, but when you think about it, look at some of the great games you miss out on doing that? its like watching a movie only if the main character is female, your missing out on some damn good classics.

so i like to play both

in RPG games I play female as i feel i can express myself that way

but I still love great story driven games Like Shadow of memories, or metal gear solid. and both you play male protagonists =)

I've always played female characters. My first rpg was DnD. I was in the military at the time and we'd get a group together on the weekends. None of the guys ever gave me any problems. The only on line games I've played are runescape and edragon and my characters are female.

Yeah ! I always played male characters ! From my first Atari until my Xbox ! Even online! Even in iPad games ! Every where !

Oh and in sims! In FB and psp my character is a boy too.

I always played as a female in every game possible. In fact I've gotten spoiled in modern gaming to the point where it takes a very special game to hold my attention if the protagonist or all playable characters are male only.

My only problem with being female in games is that most game designers and gaming companies don't take the time to make long hair styles. Everything is generally shoulder length or less which really irritates me. Even for my avatar on xbox live There are really only 2 hairstyles I use on there because everything is some ugly up do hairstyle or its one of the male hairstyles. That and apparently being tall means you look like the hulk. Haven't these game designers seen a runway model?

Oh wait... no I doubt they ever have.

*sighs*

I've played both but I bond to my female characters. The male characters tend to be stat collections and not nearly as interesting to me.

My latest game is SWTOR and given the integral story telling, I'm glad I chose female characters there, well at least so far.

I play most of my characters as female if given the option. However I also take it a step further in the mmo world. For example when I play my rogue everyone knows me as a guy, but when I play as my Mage in wow everyone refers to me as a girl.

If given the choice, I'm almost always the female character. The males tend to have a dull design a lot of the time(Sin & Punishment, Pokemon) anyway, so yeah.

I'm pretty well known for refusing to play or quickly growing bored of a game that doesn't have a playable female character.

There are exceptions: Pheonix Wright, katamari Damacy, Mario Bros, Mega Man (Please give me a Roll game CAPCOM!), Pokemon Red/Blue, and Proffessor Layton.

lol, I even play Ms. Pacman instead of Pacman. I've been that way ever since I was a kid.

Thank Goodness I thought Link was a Girl! Would've missed out on a cool story there.

If there's too much sexualization in female characters I stay away from that too. Not playing' Soul Calibur Or Dead or Alive any time soon.

Every RPG game (or game that allows the decision between male and female) I have played has been with a female character! Much like JJ, I just find it very uncomfortable to play as a male character! It just feels weird! lol

As far as gender identity goes I felt like this was one of the great positives of playing video games. It was always my escape to play as a female character. Video games are quite a malleable medium in which you as the player to a certain extent have the ability to impact the art as a whole. At least in the context of a movie, or a book one does not have the ability to actually write, or shift in which the story progresses. In a video game one has the ability to create their own story to suit what they desire. The greatest example where players are generally given the most freedom for character development are roleplaying games. This is a key example of where video games shine in that they allow the user to interact, and play around with certain norms that maybe they cannot do in the actual setting.

If you can't tell I'm quite passionate about the subject. I believe that video games can allow others to do things that they can't, and they can create a rewarding literary merit. As well as foster growth for societal, and political commentary. They can also just be for fun as well.

Serenia, you have hit the nail on the head! Video games are an excellent scape goat to reality! And they are also an excellent way of learning! I have learned a lot of things, like things og gov't and even vocabulary words, from video games!

And anything Bioware is usually awesome! I can't wait for Dragon Age 3, the next Mass Effect universe based game, and whatever universe Bioware may be coming out with next! Knowing Bioware, it's going to be a captivating universe filled with awesome stories and characters! :D

I only play one MMO, and that's WoW. The majority of my characters are women,

However I do have one toon that's a male Tauren because I *love* their /dance. It's so fun!

Oh I also have a male undead rogue, so I guess that's two. Since it's a rogue, I wanted to make a character that looked pretty wicked so male undead it is.

FWIW, I think me and the lady Blood Elves have a lot in common..we're both divas. Just listen to their /silly, like the one about the Troll spa? I can totally see myself saying that!

Having taken on the site, forums, and all of the bills, from Dev (May 2020) and because I also want to be fully transparent about the cost of running the site, I feel it's time to update this information. Sorry that it has taken me two years since I last gave an update, just life getting in the way.   If you'd like to donate, please do so via the green bar at the top of the forum pages.  The months of July through October are pretty heavy with annual and semi-annual expenses and every little bit helps.   Here's the breakdown as it stands now:   Chat is now free. (Stu now runs the Chat)   Regular Charges: There are occasional one off's as well. Forums:  $70.00 every six months (February and August, effectively billed in January and July). (Was $45 until 2022, support ticket system depreciated!) Resource Locator:  $53.00 yearly, this "widget" failed this year, so I have been able to find a (currently) free replacement. Resource Locator Mapping: Google maps, currently under the minimum monthly usage, so free. Email Delivery: $5.00 monthly currently free, changed to a service that offers a much larger monthly allowance. Server Rental:  $30.00 monthly. Greatfully sponsored by The Breast Form Store. Security Software:  Now included in the package we have. Domain Renewals: Approx $75 annual charges for Transgenderpulse.com, Lauras-playground.com and the server domain. Contact Us Form Software: $79 yearly (August).   Total Monthly Breakdown: $54.50 per month.  (Annual bills = $654) Updated May 2024 (Slightly down on previous years).   Now then.  I'm on a fixed income, which means I know what it's like not having a penny to spare.  If you're not in a position to donate, please don't feel guilty; I didn't take over here to turn a profit.  The lights will stay on.  Donations are very much appreciated, but they are not a requirement of membership.   An update to clarify a couple of points: Because you have to use your legal name with PayPal, emails confirming your donation from PayPal will be from a name with the initials "DS", not Petra Jane and the email used is tgp (at) uk-web***   Unfortunately, we can only accept payment through PayPal, and please ensure that you have permission to make any donation through a PayPal account, we have been stung by someone alledgedly using a PayPal account without the owner's permission and incurred an additional $20 chargeback to refund the donation!   We have recently seen a number of these of late so I am asking that genuine donators please add your forum username in the comment box so that I, and I alone, will know who has sent the donation and that it is genuine. Thank you. Also, this appears only to Members who are logged in on the forums, New Members need to have made a minimum of 10 posts.   Let me reassure you: Donations help towards ongoing costs related to keeping the site running, including hosting, bandwidth, etc. It also encourages us to commit regular updates, add features, and improve the service. Our promise to you is that this site and its use will always remain free of charge.     Petra Jane

This is the dress I'll be wearing this evening while we watch the Kentucky Derby. Not sure if I'll throw on heels or flats with it - probably flats but I haven't worn heels in a while and the Force is strong.
