I thought it was a great film, saw the 3D version, I am looking forward to the next movie in the series.

The book that it is based on was by Edgar Rice Burroughs and in fact as it is out of copyright you can download the books and audiobooks for free from Librivox. Link is below for the search on Librivox, first book is A Princess of Mars from which the John Carter film is based upon.

I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. My wife thought she would and didn't. I might watch it again when she's sleeping :P

I, too, had been awaiting the John Carter stories being brought to film for some time. As was mentioned above, this box office disaster will no doubt rank right up there with Heavens Gate. To say there will be no sequel is to put it mildly.

Frankly, I loved it. I feel the problem could be found in the fact that it was past its time. Yes it was topical, i.e. the demise of ancient civilizations on the Red Planet is a theme dear to the hearts of all current Speculative History buffs like myself. However, after having been dazzled by the alien civilizations displayed in Star Trek, Star Wars, etc., the race in John Carter looked but a few footsteps away from prehistoric. I don't believe that the current demographic would sit still long for such an antediluvian scenario.

I will say that the part of the Princess was carried off superbly. It's a shame that the actress's involvement in this project may put a blemish on her career.
