Paula's Total Cost (now including others)

Recommended Posts

This is the total of what I paid for my GCS (gender confirmation surgery) with Dr. Mcginn, I paid for it all using my home equity and credit card since my companies insurance excludes anything GID related, i thought it might be helpful to those planning on going to Dr. Mcginn for their GCS (gender confirmation surgery) to have an idea of what to expect in costs.

The following are my costs just to go for my surgery; it does not include the costs to go for follow-ups which you get four at no charge to you other than travel and hotel.

Note: Your total will will probably be more or less depending on the surgeon you go to, what country you have your surgery in, travel and miscellaneous costs

DR. Mcginn's price when I scheduled in June of 2010 was $17,500.00, this included her fee, Anesthesiologist and Lower Bucks Hospital fee, she has since increased her price to $18,500.00, for me it broke down as follows.

Dr. Mcginn fees $10,250.00 $1000.00 due to hold a date, $9,250.00 due one month before surgery.

Anestheologist fee $1,350.00 also due one month before surgery.

Lower Bucks Hospital fee $5,900.00 due the day of surgery at check in time.

Total $ 190.00

Food

Travel to and from Cleveland I did not eat a whole lot but drank lots of liquids if I had to guess we did not spend more than $40.00.

Food the first five days you are in the hospital is included in your hospital charges, and the food there was pretty good.

The next seven days at the bread and breakfast the breakfast is included in the price of your room, lunch and dinner you pay for, though I did not feel like eating much, I had Chinese lo mien it lasted me 3 meals, pizza lasted 2 meals, i had lots of soup. I paid for most of my companions meals in addition to mine so total was around $400.00, food in tourist towns are expensive.

Total $440.00

Incidentals

This included meds Dr. Mcginn prescribed when I left the hospital total cost about $25.00 my insurance covered some of the cost. Though I brought panty liners with me I had to buy more, and gauze pads that were not on the list, water is a must to have handy, cost was approximately $50.00.

Wow, what a great breakdown Paula!

Thanks for sharing it! It's nice to see some figure from someone who has recently gone through the process. it gives me a nice target number.

Not that cost should be the first priority as quality is definately more important regardless of financial situation but I just got a quote from Dr. Bowers of $22,500.00 for just the surgery. Definately worth "shopping around" I guess.

I agree about the quality aspect, it was one reason i selected Dr. Mcginn, i did lots of research and talked to many post-ops, they could not speak highly enough of Dr. Mcginn, she is a hands on Doctor and does everything herself, i even have her private cell phone number in case i have a question and she has called me several times just to see how i am doing, whereas i have heard of other Doctors that have others that remove the packing, catheter, show you how to dilate, etc., also due to my medical conditions she was ok doing the surgery when other surgeon's turned me down, she is only 480 miles away from where i live and that also was a consideration in case of complications and for followup appointments.

Thank you very much for posting this Paula. As someone that knows that surgery will be along the path I am trying to gather as much information on prospective doctors as possible and it is good to know that there are some good ones out there.

Kudos to you!

Thank you Paula - nicely done.

I always remind people that price alone is never the ultimate determination of anything's actual value - some very expensive products and services are not the best while a lot of moderately priced are - there are so many factors that help determine price that we do not think of about doctors.

Where they work makes a huge difference - in Thailand the Baht (there main unit of currency) is currently valued at 1 Thai Baht = 0.03353 US Dollar so hospital costs to US citizens seem low also the hotel stays and food are very reasonable - but there is the travel to consider.

SO the best thing is to do what Paula did and talk to post op patients of your chosen doctor - it is OK to change your mind before you send in any money - make a good choice for you and a part of that is how you relate to the doctor's personality.

Love ya,

Sally

I have also tenatively chosen Dr. McGinn for my bottom surgery. Not just because she is one of the best, but because I grew up in that area, know Philly vey well and love it there. Esp hoagies and cheesesteaks. Love em.

My beloved will accompany me on my trip and we will likely skip the B&B and hotel by using our motorhome. While I am recovering, she will be exploring and I will be providing remote tourguide services. New Hope, while pricey, is a fun place to shop and enjoy the tranquility. It is a very gay area too, and there is (or was) a big gay bar close by. I almost bought a house there once. The abysmal parking situation changed my mind on that tho.

I am hoping for a visit from some of my friends who live in that corner of PA while I am there. Currently, the plan allows for arrival a week early so I can go around and visit and shop and eat too. I am looking forward to it!

Since there is a thread dedicated to another surgeon and the total cost, I figured I could add mine in as well.

Penile Inversion surgery. This included two week hospital stay in private room, surgeons fees, hospital fees, psych eval, cardiologist eval, basic meals and every other fee except for an optional morphine drip for pain afterward. $6500.00

Morphine Drip for two days after surgery: $80.00

Extra food and snacks: $120.00

Broadband Internet (12 days @ $10/day) : $120.00

Hotel room before entering hospital (Royal River Hotel): $65/night * 3 nights

Taxi to and from airport/hotel/hospital: $45.00

Taxi & boat to sightsee around Bangkok: $25.00

Misc Expenses/Trinkets/Gifts/Souvenirs for friends back home: $500.00

Airfare (Upstate NY to Bangkok): $1380.00

Total cost for entire trip: $8650.00

My figures are rounded but the total cost is within $100 of the actual amount. These are 2009 prices but they haven't changed much since then, I've checked. Yanhee has some excellent surgeons, English speaking staff in the International Ward, and my surgery outcome was excellent. You do not have to pay anything up-front but be sure that if you use a credit card/debit card to pay, that you can charge the full amount of the surgery on it/them. I had to call my bank to get them to temporarily change the $2500/day transaction limit. I highly recommend bringing a laptop with Skype to call home with, plenty of music to listen to, and maybe some salt to put on the food you get before they allow you to eat solid food. It's kinda bland and I was ready to go on a hunger strike before they let me go on solid food lol. You can choose between American or Thai food once you are on solid food and I chose Thai. It was excellent. You can order extra food until about 10 or 11 PM and I frequently did. An entire meal is about $1.20 American.

If I had to do it all over again, I would choose my surgeon and Yanhee again.

Gah! I forgot to include the hotel cost. The total should be $8845.00. My apologies. I never added up all the costs including the extras like the trinkets and gifts and such, until today. I had estimated about $8500 and it was a few hundred more than that.

If the mods would, I would request that this thread be either merged with the "Paula's SRS Cost" thread that is pinned and maybe the title changed to something more generic regarding surgery experiences and cost, or this thread also be pinned. Otherwise, it portrays a preference for one surgeon over others. I think all surgeons and experiences deserve equal exposure and this could be very helpful to others.

I hate to post on a thread that hasn't been posted on for a while, but I want to thank you sincerely for giving us this information, Paula. New Hope isn't that far from here, and I'm at the point where I am tentatively searching around for surgeons. Travel and living costs would be really low for me, and I'm totally going to look more into how people liked their surgeries from Dr. McGinn. I had no clue that there were good surgeons who did this surgery so close, thanks!

Soph, don't worry this topic is pinned and is always near the top.

In about a week it will be my two year anniversary, i am satisfied with my results and know quite a few others that had surgery with Dr. Mcginn and are also satisfied with their results, however as with all surgeons i am sure there are some that are not happy due to too high of expectations or complications, those are the people you usually read about, not the success stories.

I actually had never noticed this thread before Paula, that's incredibly useful information. I had been planning on the costs being way much much higher then that, gives me a little hope that I can afford the surgery sooner than later. :) Thanks for sharing all of that info!

Yeah :) I have a consultation with Dr. McGinn in September, and it won't be much of a hassle to drive (my parents are/will be retired by the time I go for surgery, and they want to take a vacation to the Lancaster area again, so they'll be able to get me back :D ), since it's only like 6 hours away (I drive 6 hours for concerts). And that's about what I'm expecting to pay for travel etc. Driving will be a lot cheaper and quicker than flying (because I'd have to drive 90+ mins to Logan to fly to Philly...then get a ride to New Hope...), so it's just a matter of logistics and arranging everything once I book a surgery date :)

I've gone ahead and merged EllieMcay's cost thread here as well.

I think it's good to have comparative cost breakdowns and I thank Paula for initiating that process with her thread. More information is better. :)

I am in the process of writing up a post op synopsis of our trip and surgery with Dr. Saran in Thailand but I am very slow at these types of things so Here is a quick rundown of my costs for SrS.

SrS Surgery. $9000

Air Fare from Denver to Tokyo (Non stop) Tokyo to Thailand (Non Stop). We opted to spend a little more for these tickets to avoid extra layovers and to avoid China.. I have talked to many Trans and just about everyone I talked to always had problems in China. From being very rude, Mean, Bigoted and even downright stealing from American Citizens especially Trans folks while going through customs. So I would Highly recommend that you avoid any layovers or connections through China at all costs.

$1282.30 x2 = 2564.60 through Orbitz

Hotel and food costs for 1 week prior to Surgery. Very Nice Day spa with breakfast included. (Just through Internet search)

$985.

Post Op Hospital Apartment with Extra Bed in Hospital Apartment for Glenda. (My Wife) 3 Nights. She tried to sleep on the supplied couch.. Not good so just opt for the new bed right off the bat if you go with a partner.

$300

Hotel for 1 week Post OP surgery. Very nice 5 star extended stay Hotel Apartment.

$634.25 through Orbitz

We also visited many Temples and went on out of city excursions. One thing about Thailand. If you like to Haggle you will be right at home here. I personally despise Haggling so it really put us at a disadvantage. On some levels Bangkok has one goal and that is to separate tourists from their money, Mostly with the Taxi and Tuk Tuk drivers so the best thing you can do is to avoid them as much as possible. Bangkok has a very good Public Transit System so the first thing you want to do is get a map of the Elevated Train, Subway and River Bus system.. Prime example is. A guided tour to the Grand Palace for 2 people where they pick you up at the hotel and drive you there along with many stops at other hotels will run you around $50 per person along with they are always rushing you to go through the sites. One example is we visited the Temple of the Dawn. The guide gave us 20 minutes to look around and Sightsee. Well we took much longer so they ended up being a little peeved at us, so I personally would recommend you don't use the tour services except for out of city tours if at all possible.. You will enjoy yourselves much more and will really be able to take in the sites and culture at your own pace.

By taking the Transit system and not being on anyone's schedule cost us $5 round trip plus $6 for the entry fee to the Grand Palace for 2 people and we also saw the Reclining Buddha, and 3 other sites all located in he same area for less then $20 .

All in all with Tours outside the City. Tiger Temple, The real Bridge over the River Kwia, Khao Yai Natl Park Trip, River Boat Cruise and Dinner, Thai Ocean World, Eating out more then we should have, Shopping and many other Miscellaneous adventures we spent an extra $1000.

So here is what we spent on the trip and surgery by the end of the trip.

SRS. $9000

Airfare $1282.30 x2 = $2564

Eugenia Hotel Pre surgery $985.

5 day Hospital apartment

and extra bed. (Roughly,

was still out of it when

I paid the bill) $300

Post op Hotel Apartment $634

Misc. Food Trips ect. $1000

______________________________

$14483

I had budgeted $15,000 for the complete trip so we came in under budget, But could have easily spent more if we wanted to.

Thank you all for sharing this important information. Dr. Mcginn's office is only 8 miles from my home so that's wear i'm going for my orchiectomy. If anyone needs a local guide my rates are extremely low 00000. I spend a good bit of time in Lambertville right across the river from New Hope. The gay bar is called the Raven and the food there is very good but it is posh and expensive.

Hugs,

SIGHTLINES   I worship at the point of a gun On Friday nights and Sunday mornings. I pray for peace under the watchful eye of hired men With guns holstered on their hips Who laugh with us Eat with us Pray with us -      Dear God, not tonight      Not this morning      Not my friends      Please, not on my watch And I'm fully aware of the irony of the statement Because too often, our ancestors were forced to pray At the point of a gun because they said the wrong prayers In the wrong languages Loved the wrong person Identified the wrong way But today, I do so of my own free will. When I leave, I say thank you -      That it wasn't tonight      It wasn't this morning      It didn't happen while I sang      It wasn't my friends Because this week the guns stayed silent. But next week and next week and weeks afterward Could be the week that guns point in, not out And I can't will myself to believe it could never happen here because      Someone tried to bomb my Temple,       Someone set it on fire,      Someone shot up the clinic where I go for healthcare      Someone shot up the club my friends danced at So when I pray, I offer a wish to the universe That guns be melted into musical instruments and works of art. If someone wishes to shoot me, They will have to beat works of art into tools for the hand Before they can become instruments of war again.

This is important for us all to keep really close to our hearts, especially as we go through a doubting phase or anxiety wave. I always go to the joy I have found being who I am, a person that does not conform with my birth assignment and the gender I defaulted to for many years. That places me under the trans umbrella and I need to feel comfortable and confident about that.   I am so glad you were able to deal with this person and others that confronted you with grace and poise. It seems like this person targeted your session specifically, they didn't want anything from it but to be a thorn in your side. I highly doubt she was there to expand her worldview. It is hard when your goal is to get through the content and someone wants to make the session a dialogue with them only. Challenges to our worldviews are important, they help us shape and define our beings, but that doesn't mean we have to deal with gatekeeping and hate.   I wish there was more content like your session available out there. I understand recording such content is a touchy subject, with the speakers and audience being general targets, but gosh it would be nice. I volunteered at the Time to Thrive event for HRC and got to sit in a few sessions, both as a moderator and a couple just as a participant, and it was very energizing. Thank you for being out there any speaking your truth, @Sally Stone!

There are all kinds of us. My situation at the time enabled me to begin living full time as a woman, and get onto hormones.  I realize everyone doesn't have that option - or want it. I also realize there are people who would consider me not truly transgender because I haven't had the surgery, and probably never will. Whatever…
    • Vidanjali
Yeah. Trans folk still cannot update or renew FL drivers licenses. Florida part of the lawsuit against updated trans student Title IX protections. Florida suing Biden admin over ban on discrimination in healthcare based on gender.  Despite injunctions for individuals of some things including trans youth healthcare and using affirmed pronouns in school, bans still in place. The list goes on. Honestly I have stopped keeping up with news as much as I used to for the good of my mental health. Peace, y'all.

Post 14 “I’m not Trans Enough”   I have mentioned in other posts my affiliation with the Keystone Conference in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  For several years, I facilitated a conference workshop titled “Making the Most of Part-time Womanhood.”  Each time I ran the workshop, it was standing room only, so I know for a fact, the idea resonates with many.   When I originally planned the workshop the target audience was geared towards girls like me, those who weren’t planning permanent transition.  I also expected to attract girls who may have been on the path to permanent transition but because of timing or life circumstances couldn’t.  What I didn’t expect as part of my attracted audience were hecklers and naysayers.  Thankfully, I only had to deal with a couple of those, but it only takes one to ruin everybody’s day.   Sadly, there exists a radical fringe that has permeated our community from the beginning.  The fringe mindset holds to the idea that being a trans woman means you were born a woman trapped in a man’s body, and the only recourse is to live as a woman fulltime.  Anything or anyone not fully aligned with this idea, is a threat to real trans women.  Apparently, my lifestyle choice, and my workshop were just the kind of threats that needed to be eliminated.   I was several minutes into the workshop, had just given a short overview of what I was going to cover when one person told me I should make certain everyone in attendance knew that I wasn’t speaking on behalf of trans women, that instead, I should be quite clear that I was speaking as a crossdresser.  The comment caught me off guard initially, but I rallied pretty quickly and tried to remind this person that the term transgender was an umbrella term that covered a wide spectrum.    Of course, she wanted to argue the point and went on to point out that since I was not going to live my life as a woman on a fulltime basis, I couldn’t be transgender, and then adding cruelty to her rhetoric, she reminded me and my audience that I was nothing more than a man in a dress.    I’m pretty non-confrontational most of the time, but her comments really pushed my buttons.  I could feel my defensive hackles raising and I knew I had to be careful not to stoop to her level.  So, instead of any stinging retorts, and believe me, I was thinking of many, I took the high road and as politely as I could, informed her that if she continued to disrupt the workshop, I would have her removed.  She responded by telling me she was going to report me and my workshop to the conference organizers.  I told her reporting me was her prerogative, and actually encouraged her to do it immediately as a way of getting her out of the room.   She didn’t take the bait and stayed for the entire workshop.  Thankfully, there were no further outbursts, but she used all sorts of overt body language to show her displeasure with my blasphemous views.  When the workshop ended, she cornered me and continued to berate me, insisting I was a simple crossdresser that tended to make real trans women look bad.  I wanted to just let things go, but her cruel comments had pushed me too far, so I reported her to the conference staff.  I figured if she had targeted my workshop, it was likely she would target others.  Conference officers informed her that her views were outdated, bigoted, and not in keeping with the conference’s commitment to inclusiveness.  She was reminded that by persisting in voicing those kinds of views and being disruptive, she wouldn’t be welcome at the conference.   I facilitated this particular workshop for four-years, and thankfully, this was the only serious confrontation I experienced.  However, there were others that espoused similar views, only they didn’t raise their disagreements to a confrontational level.  It bothers me immensely that some within our own community, would seek to marginalize another trans person.  Of course, I’m not naïve enough to think our community would be any different than society as a whole.  Sadly, there will always be some (only a few, thankfully) who inflate their sense of self-worth by putting down others.   It's difficult enough dealing with a general population that doesn’t understand us, but when we are attacked by our own, it tends to hurt even more, and it can cause us to question ourselves.  Ultimately, we cannot let others tell us who we are, and certainly, we cannot let them decide if we are trans enough.  Being transgender is being transgender, period.  Yes, we can be different, but we must remember there is no measurement that ranks how trans we are.   Hugs,   Sally

I read the postulation as: “what if <insert social media company> was charged by government agencies or congress to create algorithms to identify, collect information on, and for reporting on LGBTQ+ people? So as to target them for “reasons”.”   This would be infringement of a few protections in the Constitution & Bill of Rights, but given government’s history with shady surveillance practices we wouldn’t know anything about it until it was likely in use. Probably in the realm of a suspense novel, but we know algorithms used for suggesting content already can identify people’s proclivities—even when they don’t have a clue themselves. So the tech is there, it’s just the dark room conspiracy that would be missing.

How insidious would it be for them to take it easy on the LGB as a strategy to try to create a fracture between the TQ+? There’s enough of the “drop the T” nonsense out there that they could leverage.   I’m happy the FLA folx are getting some reprieve though!

I note that most of the "backing off" touted in the article concerns Gay and Lesbian rights.  Nothing so far about the anti-trans laws and regulations that DeSantis and his ilk have gotten approved.  The only saving graces for our community in Florida have been in the courts.  So, as the saying goes, I'll believe it when I see it.   Carolyn Marie

It's kind of like the very slow recovery after a devastating hurricane (which mercifully I've not lived through). Rainbows do tend to appear post-storm.    About the Don't Say Gay settlement. Teachers are now allowed to talk about LGBTQIA+ stuff & to be LGBTQIA+, as long as it's not part of the curriculum. So still no formalized education allowed.    The overall impression on the culture of Florida and its influence on US and world culture has had its effect. I do consider myself an optimist and a realist, and do not mean to seem pessimistic. It is good that DeSantis has cooled his jets to whatever extent he has. But the collateral damage here (and by extension elsewhere) is palpable. Yes, people rejoice - we can gather once more and celebrate pride. But it seems to require more guts than just a few years ago bc so many h8ers have been enabled and empowered by policies and demonizing rhetoric over the last few years.    The wonderful thing about hurricane recovery, returning to that comparison, is that it often brings out the very best virtues in people such as compassion, kindness, generosity, and a deeper sense of fellowship and goodwill.

Seems like they caught him pumping gasoline onto a political fire for sure.  I do think that for the time being he has been cooled down a bit.

It was Fran Jeffery, manager of The Animals, who signed Jimi Hendrix and brought him to England—launching the career of the best guitarist of all time.

I am not completely sure what you mean here.  To be "held responsible" means that they have been investigated and brought to justice by any number of legal and financial means.  That would be a good thing, and has been done recently in a case for slander and libel where the organization agreed to pay its victims many millions of dollars.  In that case the victims were NOT Trans, but the platform was "held responsible". If you mean simply "found to be responsible" by evidence obtained from various credible sources, then of course there are options for the victims to pursue to "hold them responsible" in monetary or terms of personal freedom of the officers.  There are many such organizations that do foster hatred of our community and we have taken different forms of action which includes exposing their hatred and intentions to other public media.  It is not a "what if" the groups do this, it is done regularly.  As long as they are deemed to be private and not government supported, the best we can do is avoid such places.  If the site is Government Supported, then there is a chain of legal events that one or many legal organizations that support the Trans Community can bring actions to have corrected via the Courts or other agencies as dictated by law.

Florida’s LGBTQ+ residents relieved after easing of DeSantis’s anti-gay laws Past 12 months show evidence of radical change in political climate, starting with judge again allowing children at drag shows. Leaders of Florida’s much-embattled LGBTQ+ communities say the worst of Governor Ron DeSantis’s three-year onslaught against them may be over, with the official start of Pride month celebrations only days away. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/may/27/florida-lgbt-law-ron-desantis

I have four purses. A Coach purse being the only big-name brand but it's not in great shape. I might get another Coach purse because I like their design.
