Really nervous about upcomming hearing.

Well in just two weeks I have my hearing for my legal name change, they only do it at 8am every friday and I'm scheduled for the 21st. I have to admit I'm starting to feel really nervous about it! I've never really even been in a courtroom, and I have absolutely no idea what to expect! It's been awhile since I've really felt anxious about something but this has me feeling that way a little again. I haven't even had to do jury duty, when I get my summons Ive never been called in!

I'm not sure what I should even wear to my hearing, or if I should even bother wearing anything more than my usual jeans and tee. Was just wondering if anyone who's done the whole name change hearing thing could share their experiences a bit so I could at least have some idea what to expect. :)

Hugs,

Sarah

I got to this part "or if I should even bother wearing anything" and thought omg yes you can't go naked!

The court room is a professional work environment for people in the legal system so you should dress at least a little nice. No need for a suit, leave that to the lawyers, but you should dress business casual. You're making a court appearance so you should look nice.

The rule of thumb is "what would I wear to conduct serious business with a professional person?" As a retired court clerk (among other things), my suggestion is to wear something that you would wear to apply for a nice job. You do not have to go as far as the business suits an attorney would wear, but if you have a nice solid color skirt with a top that is comfortable, and maybe a plain color sweater over it, stockings and flats, you would look great and be very appropriate.

You will most likely be called forward inside "the bar" and sworn in by the clerk. Follow the clerk's instructions on where to stand, and take a deep breath. The court reporter will ask for current name and may be your city of residence. The judge will ask a couple of questions, mostly about whether you are changing your name to hide from a creditor or law enforcement issue. The answer will be a simple "No" or "No your honor!!" They may also ask if you are doing this of your own free will as an adult. Answer is "Yes" or "Yes your honor". There should not be any point at which you need to divulge your status as Transgendered.

Thanks Liz, and thanks Vicky that really does help quite a bit! :) I do hope that it goes that smoothly I'm not really super used to public speaking and I know there will be other people there probably.. I'll just have to deal with it. With any luck the whole trans thing won't be an issue, but colorado is a pretty trans friendly state so with any luck it wont be at all. I do actuallly own a black knee length skirt with some white and black blouses, I just haven't really worn it for anything yet I suppose I had the hearing bugging me somewhere in the back of my mind when I bought them last week.

I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks :)

Oh Lizzie, as for going nude sounds like a nightmare I had once or twice when I was a kid going to school. I definitely will be wearing clothes. :)

Sarah

Although I don't really have much advice on this topic I just want to wish you all the best of luck, I'm sure it will all be ok and worth it in the end.

I'd probably wear what I'd wear to an interview or meeting, something semi-formale.

Also, just a little comment I've never said before, you look absolutely lovely in your picture!

Aw, thanks on both things Aaron! :) I'm sure it'll be fine just nerves acting up on me, and my mind having so much time to think about it I end up dreaming the worst possible scenarios. lol

The black skirt and white blouse is simple and very appropriate. You will do fine. I hate to say this, but the judges are really pretty bored with this type of job and want it over as bad as you do.

Do yourself a favor and be prepared.

Outside failing to file some required piece of paper or take some specific action, most of the times these things are pretty straightforward and nothing to worry about.

What did you file as reason for name change? Did you state you were transitioning? Or just state it is a preference?

If you stated you were transitioning in the application, did you furnish a note from your doctor or therapist supporting the assertion? A judge may not require it and often doesn't, but if you are making a claim that suggests it is part of medical treatment and if you state transition it may be presumed to be medical, the judge could ask for evidence.

If you didn't say you were transitioning on the application that is fine, but the nature of the change may cause the judge to ask about it. How do you intend to answer? Be prepared with an answer.

And if the answer you furnish is that you are transitioning, be prepared with documentation.

Also, if this is the only time name changes are handled, if the question comes up, are you comfortable explaining in front of others in the court room? Having a letter prepared (better one from therapist) explaining the situation could allow you to pass that up. Now the judge may accept it into the record or like I saw once, read it into the record...oh well...in front of everyone...but at least you aren't trying to explain. You may be asked to affirm what the letter states.

If you are ready for that and got your ducks in a row you will do fine.

Drea, I actually do have a note on my doctors prescription letterhead that I am transitioning and currently on HRT in my purse. She wrote it for me incase I ever had issues with my ID not matching my face for example getting pulled over. So If asked I could share that, but yes I did put transitioning as the reason for name change. I didn't add it to my petition when I filed it or anything as evidence the clerk said I had everything in order so hopefully that is the case.

Yeah the FBI background check was way faster then the court said they would be, so I ended up having to scramble to get the CBI card sent in and they took a full 4-5 weeks, and I actually submitted the CBI Fingerprint card in person at their main offices in Denver in person.

Im sure you'll get it back sooner than later :) Once you do getting it all submitted is pretty easy. :)

and if the Judge says "order in the court!" don't say "I'd like a cheeseburger and fries, please."

I didn't even have to show up in court. Filed the paperwork and weeks later got the ruling. I did have to go to the courthouse for some certified copies of the name change ruling though. Bought 10 just in case. I think I still have 8 left. Oh well, better to have too many than not enough I guess. :)

I have to say my harried family court judge, made my time on the stand very short. I went in the court on time, on the sign up desk he asked what he "Help the lady with"... "Oh that's the name change." Moved me to the first case of the day and out. I just tried to be polite, since I did it pro se. I may have missed some formalities. Never the less, it worked fine anyhow.

Sarah, you are well prepared so there is no reason for anything to go wrong. It's just one more wall of fear to step through. Think about how far you've already come and focus on the rewards on the other side of that fear.

I'll be in the same situation one of these days and will be just as nervous, maybe more so.

You will be fine.

Thanks all, Melissa I don't think it'll be quite like that here they only schedule name change hearings for Fridays at 8am, so I think I'll be scheduled with a bunch of other name changes. I had to wait about 2 months because they were booked out until the end of june!

Thanks heather, I'm sure I'll be fine just not a huge fan of going into things blind. :) Im sure you'll get there soon enough too hon. :)

Still there is no foreseen evidence of problems. I was under the no legal advice of the court clerk to make a minimum verbiage legal filing. That's preceisely what I done. The judge only expanded questioning off the official petition into my marital status- which was he was also presiding as judge over, that was settled a few months later too with his stamp of approval, without court interventions.

Best of luck, Sarah :)

My own experience (my second time in a courtroom, first was for jury duty [wasn't selected]...) was pretty easy, since it was about 5 people all changing their names. The clerk even asked me if I wanted to be referred to as "Kylie" by the judge (since someone would only have known my birth name if they were a legal notices hound...). The judge was cool, called everyone by the names they were changing to. All I had to say was I affirm to tell the truth, "yes," and "thank you, Your Honor." :)

And yeah, skirt/blouse. Business casual.

I've been transitioning now for eight months but have been wearing women's clothing for 2+ years. I am over weight and approaching my 72nd birthday. I have purchase my solid color clothing online and recently graduated to 'V' neck tops. I have been hesitant to get anything more girly due to family issues, though with my hair style I am able to totally pass when dressed in a skirt and blouse.   About two  months ago I finally went and got my nails done (which I truly which I had done long ago) though not red nor pink (again family issues). To date I don't think I am having problems with being trans unlike others seem to have. The biggest problem I am having is with my clothing. Any suggestions my girl friends might have would be greatly appreciated.   Cindy

Umm.... if a post is ignored, live with it?   My stuff gets ignored sometimes, and its OK.  My life is different, and may seem kind of wacky to others.  Some folks just can't relate, or if I'm needing advice they just don't have it.  Diversity is like that sometimes.  If your post gets missed, don't take it personally.  Also, stuff that is new on weekends seems to get ignored more, since most folks are busy with family or other stuff during that time.  Overall, I think people here are pretty helpful.

I'd really love a professional stove.  There's actually one I want at Lowes, but its like $6k.  I've got plenty of money, the issue is that I'm not the queen (king?) of my den.  Or even of the kitchen.  My partner (husband's wife #1) owns that territory, and she's very attached to what she's got.  One of our stoves has 6 burners and a large oven, the other has 4 burners and a regular household sized oven.  And of course, there's always the wood-burning equipment.    Today was interesting.  We had the first campaign fundraiser for our sheriff and my sister.  My sister is running to be constable of our township.  Pretty sure she'll win, as her opponent is an old dude who is mostly running on "Don't elect a woman for a man's job"    What's weird is our sheriff is running as a Democrat, but he's conservative.  And his Republican opponent sounds like a leftist.  Welcome to Upside-down-ville   And of course all the kids got the chance to sit in a sheriff's car, and play with the lights.   We had a barbecue lunch and a dessert auction.  I baked three apple pies for it, and I was shocked that they sold for $20 each, since my cooking isn't that great.  My partner made her famous "Chocotorta."  It's like a chocolate layer cake with cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, and it tastes amazing.  Usually we have it for Christmas and other really special occasions.  Two guys got into a bid war, and it sold for $175!!!    Yep, this is politics in the South.  Barbecue, pies, and police cars.  A great way to spend a Saturday

It seems plain to me, that this thing is simply a cherry-picked excuse to persecute trans people - especially trans youth in the UK.  And it will also be used here in the states to legislate against trans care here as well.   The right wing has already made up their mind about us, and they are just looking for "evidence" to legislate against us.     Seems like if they were really for "freedom" as they claim, they would leave us alone to live in our personal "delusions".   I mean, I have no problem with cis people.  Some of my best friends are cis people.

I am so happy with Maybelline products. For my basic needs, I love their Magic Eraser. I used the app to dial in the best shade and it works great just -- even as a very light "foundation"

I think this can be a big part of it. There are times when I just don't have the experience or expertise to respond.   Is there a specific post we've missed @Ladypcnj?  I remember that my intro post had less than 10 responses. Some of that has to do with timing, too.    I've also found that the more I posted to various threads the more responses I've received. But, I can tell you that there are times when almost no one responds to my posts. Don't take it personally. Keep posting where you feel comfortable and people will get to know you.   It really is a friendly and accepting place.

Oh, the guilt can be overwhelming, can't it? It's kind of like the joke about the difference between Protestants and Catholics.   Protestants have sex without guilt.   Catholics have guilt without sex.   It seems as if guilt is just a natural by product of our gender identity confusion whether we have any awareness of it or not. We feel different and so we blame ourselves for not feeling as others say we should.   What a tremendously uplifting moment it is when we can finally shed that guilt. Bask in the relief, M.A.   And having the right therapist seems so crucial to me. I had, fortunately, a very quick and strong connection and trust in my therapist. She was a life saver for me. Literally.   Again, welcome to TGP!!

For me, with my former therapist, it was almost more like a frog in a pot slowly coming to a boil - I don't think either of us realized the scope of what we were dealing with until fairly recently. And she helped me find my new practitioner, which was incredibly helpful too <3 It feels very strange and new - I've framed this, whatever this is, as 'being bad at being female' for literal decades, since puberty really, and the idea that maybe it's not my fault, that I've never done anything 'wrong,' is a little overwhelming.

I had fun doing this a few weeks ago.  This is how I got rid of -money:     This music player code of mine is really working out nice.  My music collection is all mp3 files.  I put them on my server and then code things like that to play them and loop them.  And then I coded an app while I was in the mental hospital in 2009 that I use to transcribe my music with.  It's a Windows app and you can browse to an mp3 or use a URL to an mp3.  Once it is in the program, it looks like a normal music software timeline and there are sliders to slow it down and speed it up by octaves, semitones and cents, so you have complete control over what key the music is in.  And you can create loops in it and I added a feature a few years ago where it remembers all the settings so when you open it again, you still have the same loop set with the pitch settings.  I've been putting my favorite recordings in it lately, setting the funkiest loop I can find and then slow it down an octave or more.  Then I play drums to it and piano stuff, or pennywhistle.  I like playing drums on the floor.  Even though I got rid of money and well, I should have done that decades ago, I had a good time the other day hitting my bin of GO stones with my drumstick.   I don't know if I'll get flagged for self promotion here or not.  You know, I'm a musician and I'm just sharing ideas for how to listen to and enjoy learning to play music.  I'm not the only one who has made tools like this.  I'm really geeking out on my roommates drumset.  I learned to play in the 90's, but I haven't had a set since then.  I've been playing 5 gallon plastic water bottles as hand drums for 30 years.  They are relatively inexpensive and common and they sound great.  Very fun to play along to your favorite music.  And if you can slow the music down, it can make it easier to play to for some songs.  As advanced as I get as musician, I still enjoy just meditating on playing some simple pattern over and over.  Lately I've been playing an Emin7 chord going to an Fmaj7 chord on the piano.  It's all white keys.  You just play an E and then skip a key etc...  Every other key for 4 notes and then just move that all up one key for the Fmaj7 chord.  I just like the droning quality of it.
