The Delivery Truck Affair

I had to rent a large pick-up type delivery truck from Home Depot this morning to carry a screen door home (nope, it wouldn't fit in my Mustang). It was parked in a regular parking space. I was fairly scared to back it up, not having driven something that large in 25 years. But a nice man saw me in the cab and sensed my problem, and helped me navigate it safely out. He kept saying "you're doing fine, dear" and "you've got lots of room, sweetie." I'm not big on playing the "helpless female" role, but in this case, it surely helped, and felt pretty good to be validated, too.

Oh, he might have done the same to help out another guy. But I doubt that 'sweetie" would have been part of the dialogue.

That is such a lovely story Carolyn, it made me smile and reminded me of a few days ago. I was chatting to a chap in the same office as me (we often chat motorbikes) and I'm convinced he knows what I am. Well, the other day he called me ' love' (in Yorkshire that's like 'sweetie'). Yes, it's nice.

I would have to agree with not wanting to play the helpless female, and I would be sure that sweetie would not have been used in the male case. Great to hear that story, must have been a truly satisfying moment.

At least it was "sweetie" and not a less than complimentary term for woman.

That has to feel great. For the first time this past Friday I had a gentleman hold a door for me. I was picking up pizza for movie night with my therapy group. It felt odd at first but after a moment it was really nice. I thanked him. Then leaving another fellow held the door for me. Definitely a good feeling.

Work it! Work it! I love to do damsel in distress as needed. Poor leggy blond...

I just love it when the girls call me Doll! The boys can call me babe, sweetie, sis, honey or toots.

Boys, call me man, sir, dude, bro, he or him. I will roll my eyes at my girlfriends and say "no gina for him!" The girls fall out laughing, high fives, to watch his red face.

I'm bad, I love it! Hug. JodyAnn

I love the comments i get from guys who don't think i can drive the farm dumbstruck or our RV. It is sweet that they try to help but at times i can understand why cis women get frustrated. Being treated as incompetent is unpleasant even if i'm called sweetie. That makes it better for me but probably not for the cis woman.

Hugs,

Charlize

It sounds great Carolyn. It's a while since I have driven anything larger than a car. It reminds me of when I was in my teens and had part time jobs on farms and had fun backing with trailers on lol. The last time was more recent when I had to jump on a tractor and stop it rolling away (it had been left in neutral). The confusion of so many controls with a modern tractor!

I get called love and sweetie most of the time, even when in nominally male mode. I do sometimes wonder if love is used when people are not certain as many women call people love whether male or female. I also wonder if I am ever confused as FTM when dressed as male because I still wear some makeup and adopt female mannerisms.
