I'm not sure about the part about the letters of recommendation. This is permanent, life-altering surgery. A couple of fair gatekeepers are, from my point of view, important for keeping people from doing something they're going to regret.

 

The rest of the article though... I just kept nodding my head and saying, "Yup, been there, done that. On the waiting list."

 

It would be nice if treatment for our condition was more economically friendly and a bit more accessible though. There's one doctor in my state... who I can't use because of other medical reasons (and frankly he scares the crap out of me)... so I'm going out of state. Because I'm going out of state, my insurance company is denying coverage. While I'm thinking about it, more surgical options would be nice too.

 

Heck, if I'm really reaching for my wish-list I'd like to see research into technologies and techniques to provide us with better quality care and more dramatic results.

 

Great. Now I bummed myself out... sorta. And people keep asking me, "Isn't the LGBTQ+ cause over and done?"

We have “universal” health care here in Canada and I can tell you the situation is pretty much the same. We have limited options for surgeons, what is covered is very limited and because of our coverage, private insurance doesn’t really cover anything other than meds. We have lots of issues with doctors refusing to treat us, misgendering and all the usual ignorant behaviors. 
 

So I get where you’re coming from Jackie.
