Autistic Son

My oldest (10) son has finally started asking why Daddy is dressing different and wearing a bra. It was kinda funny but I noticed the other day when I had my breast forms in he kind of arches his back when he hugs me, so they don’t press against him.

As I said in the title, he is autistic and I am trying to figure out how to explain what’s going on with me so he can understand. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have to admit I’m kinda at a loss at the moment.

For any 10 year old, the simplest explanation will do fine for the near future.  My experience with AS children is that they do not have to process a lot of "whys" to get acceptance of how other people are acting.  The important thing for your son, or any child is that they did not cause you to do what you are, and by doing the things that you are, he will be safe and cared for.    At 10 children, sex is not the talk of the day.  I have a grandson who is very high functioning AS (Aspie light as even he jokes about it).  I am betting it will be less a problem than it would be if he were older and it will be becoming routine which takes off stress fairly early.  Big deal is not to over explain things which can be upsetting.  There are Trans people who are Autistic themselves, and they do have some on-line groups.  You can also find some help here http://www.PFLAG.org.

Justine,

Kids like routine and soon learn to expect routine in their lives when they’re young. When they notice things change and it can’t be explained by previous routine or experiences, it’s normal for them to ask why the change. You likely won’t get too much if any judgement either at that age if you explain it it terms they can understand. I came out to my grandkids and I used analogy to help them see why you need to be yourself.

For example; One analogy you might try is a story of being told you were left handed all your life. Everyone told you that you needed to always do things with your left hand....write with your left hand, throw a ball with your left hand, even use your fork with your left hand. One day, you tried using your right hand and it just felt right. You made the switch to using your right hand and everyone complained. They kept telling you that you have to use your left hand. Then after struggling for years you decide one day to make a choice for yourself and tell everyone you know...”I am going to use my right hand because I’m right handed and it feels right for me!”

Anyways, it’s a silly story but you get the point. Kids are great using their imagination and can understand things really well when told in analogy or stories THEY can relate to to make your point.

I hope it goes well for you, Justine!?

My Best,

Susan R?

Having three boys 17, 8, and 7, the youngest two both have autism I would suggest that you explain it in on his level.  It is very important to make sure that he knows that you are there for them and it's not in any way his fault. Change can be hard for anyone and in my experience it's extra difficult when autism is involved so go slow, make him feel safe and ensure him you love him and are there for him. I would also encourage him to ask questions. Finally maybe consider reading I am Jazz with him. I did that when I came out to my oldest son who was around 12 years old at the time. After coming out to my oldest son I spoke with my therapist and brought him with me to a couple of sessions.  He also did some one on one as well. Just be patient and reassuring and everything will be fine.

Best of luck take care,

Jamie

Quick bit a background, I am an autistic adult.

We refer to autism as a spectrum because there are so many different components and issues that various individuals may have or not have.  One component of autism is extreme sensitivity to various sensory experiences. Personally I encounter sensitivity issues to light and sound. However, for a number of autistic individuals "touch" can be something they struggle with. In this case I am using the word touch as it applies to the sense of touch, not the verb "to touch". When you go to hug your son, it is possible that he is also reacting to the feeling of the breast forms. I wear breast forms myself, and they do feel different compared to genuine breasts. Just a thought.

I think this is going to be more difficult than I thought.  We were watching I am Jazz the other day and his main comment was that Jazz has a lot of problems. He just has trouble wrapping his head around the LGBTQ+ ideas.  Just got to keep gently working with him.

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions

I read your post with interest when you first put it up, having an autistic child myself. At the time I felt that I did not have anything particular to add, as Sofia comes from an authorative place and makes a lot of sense. I thought that my daughter would also be a bit weirded out by breast forms as she most definitely has tactile issues (as well smell and sound). But the main thing I was thinking about here is about "projection." My daughter will "shy away" from lots of tactile experiences, it has nothing to do with ME WEARING tights or a particular dress, etc. It is about the material and her mood at the moment. Thus, I was thinking about your son and his Jazz comment. It really could have come from a much more grounded place. As my daughter can be super matter of factly, it could be that your son was looking at (The girl Jazz's life) as troubled, with boys, and relationships, and friends and ... normal everyday life stuff. My daughter doesn't "get" why people are so troubled by everyday things. She even thinks that if you are transgender you just need to "live it." She can't bend her mind around why it is a problem. Perhaps if you look at your son with this lens it may change everything?

I hope so!

Well it’s gotten a little better. He no longer tries to completely avoid touching my breast forms lol. My wife and I are talking about getting Jazz’s children’s book for him.
@Sabine he isn’t entirely wrong about Jazz though. She is very open about all her mental health issues and eating disorder. We just keep gently working with him.

Sounds like time for a new Body Technician hopefully one that is actually a Doctor Of Medicine, this one you describe is short of that mark.

I've been seeing my new treating doctor for quite some time now, whenever I'm advised to make an appointment. When it comes to seeing a new treating doctor, hard part is starting all over again building trust between patient and doctor. On my first day seeing my new treating doctor, before I could say anything else to her, she explained to me I needed to be completely honest with her. I kind of expected that type of patient profiling response from her, since she doesn't specialize in intersex care. Anyway, I sat down in the chair as I explained to my new doctor, I don't have all of my hospital records, certain records from my childhood and teenager years are mysteriously missing regarding a surgery. After my examination was over, she disregarded or showed no interest in searching for my missing medical records, but instead she blamed me for how I take care of my health today.

Had a customer bring in her Subie for struts. I ordered fronts. later yesterday, the boss called me into the shop. the proceeds to say I ordered the wrong ones, the fronts instead of rears. Then today I got looking I did order the right ones the first time. All the paper work that I have says front even the last work order said fronts. I told the other boss. So, Have I gotten a sorry from the boss. Ha, ha, not yet. I am doubting I will ever get one.   Oh, well. life goes on.   Kymmie

While I agree with a lot of the campaign personally, I don't think a government-mandated reduction in childbirth is really necessary. As a young person, I hardly know anyone who wants to be a parent in the future. I think a lot of people will either be waiting a while or not having kids at all, meaning that the number of kids being born will probably decrease. Overcrowding's also mostly an urban issue -- plenty of places in rural America have plenty of space for both people and growing food.    Of course, everyone sees things differently, so I won't necessarily say you're wrong. I just think my generation is a lot less inclined to the family mindset than some that came before us.

To me, it sounds like a solution searching for a problem.  I believe in the Russian perspective, that oil is abiotic and likely under every part of the Earth's surface.  There's plenty.  "Peak oil" and "climate" are excuses for government control.   As for roads, we use asphalt because tar and bitumen are a byproduct of fuel production, not the other way around.  Asphalt is not a great material, really.  It can also be recycled somewhat and used again.  Notice how road crews grind down existing asphalt into powder? Concrete is a better material for roads.  But in areas like where I live, very little of our roads are paved.  Gravel is a luxury, and a lot of roads are mud.  Same in many "developing" nations.  Pavement is better for transport, but its not like we would die without it.  Lack of pavement might actually be a good thing, as people might stay home more and food might be grown locally instead of relying on transportation.  It would stop this wacky idea of growing everything in California.     I believe the big crisis we face is globalism and government control.  Proposing some scheme to control our families? That's just more of the same.  Even if folks managed to get enough votes (or rig enough elections) to get the power to do that, it won't be as VP or president of the USA in its current 50-state form.

Very cool. I've been clumsily navigating the world of makeup so this may help. Some of the tutorials on YouTube are so advanced, they may as well be speaking Klingon :P

I've realized that our laptops are using much less plastic than they used to.  They are smaller devices that use less raw materials and are easier to ship and hold up better in shipping than bigger computers with removable parts.  They seem to have gotten rid of the overheating/fan problem for the most part, but there is a performance hit for that.  I use a 10yo desktop computer with a moderate level gaming video card to run 3 monitors.  I'm a producer though and most consumers have no need for that.   I really haven't watched TV since the 80's.  I spend some time researching on the internet and then I spend a lot of time meditating on the objects in my environment and on the streets.  From living on the streets for a year, I've learned that people can say anything and can control you, but the laws of physics and mathematics are outside of that and really even transcend time itself.  After people would not support my music, I built my life as a software engineer based on mathematics and engineering.  I've had a moderately successful career with that and have written code for many different industries.   The problem with stopping oil usage is that if we still need the bitumen to pave our roads and shingle our houses, then what do we do with the gas when we refine it?  There are natural deposits of bitumen, but you know, with so many people out there, demand is huge and we are using this stuff up.  If you grow corn for corn syrup, then what do you do with the cobs?  We've shipped coffee and bananas all over the world.  We took material from those environments.  What do we do now?  How long can it last?

I think that threats that can be proven should be incarcerated for half the sentence of the one they would commit if carried out.  Lies unfortunately are just words unless as you stated if not under oath.
    • Ivy
I think it depends on where and how it's happening. We also need safe places where, the perhaps more easily intimidated, can feel free to express themselves.     And what about threats of violence?  Can this lead to a place where only the violent can have this freedom?  Is it "free speech" to threaten and intimidate opposing views into silence?  I mean maybe, if I can say anything - "if you don't shut up I'll kill you."   Or spreading lies?  (perhaps about an election). Lying is okay, unless you're under oath - for what that's worth.   Censoring books in schools?  That was fine until the bible was included.  (there is some nasty stuff in there) Then, there's what used to be that free speech birdie place.  You can denigrate queer people all you want, but "cis" is a slur, and prohibited?  Free speech as long as I like it? And let's not go into court cases and gag orders. Porn?
