Need for More Therapist Resources

I have been lucky to find a wonderful Therapist in my area that is right between Cleveland and Columbus Ohio. Our area is sort of a NO-(Wo)Man's-Land for LGBTQ+ support. The wonderful HRT group I work with out of Columbus area had me on a waiting list for Therapists for over 9 months but as I say, I found a wonderful Therapist on my own because I just could not nor would not wait and I feel so many of us should not have it so hard to find qualified gender identity and dysphoria specialists.

What has been your experience?

How did you find (if you have) a Therapist who actually has experience and has helped?

Can you afford the help and/or does your health care (or lack thereof) cause this to be a real hardship?

My Therapist wants to develop a LGBTQ clinic in our area because outside major metropolitan areas, it seems the support is really hit and miss and lacking. I am helping by fact gathering, researching the growth of our community as we become more outward to our needs and are starting to receive more creedence especially to the younger generations where LGBTQ is not a dirty word.

I'd love to hear your experiences and recommendations.

Thank You,

Shay (Heather)

You, and they could check out our list of trans friendly practices on our Wordpress site resource Locator

Always happy to add new ones, especially those who are recommended by our membership.

On that note, I came across a group called Clintonville Counseling seems to do a lot with the LGBTQ+ Community here in Columbus. Here is a link with more information: https://www.clintonvillecounselingandwellness.com/

Another place that is great in the Columbus-Area and a few other satellite locations is Equitas Health. They focus on LGBTQ+ Healthcare and counseling. They are great, they even run a free support group right now for Trans individuals. More about them here: https://equitashealth.com/

@Shay I think it is great what you are trying to do with your therapist. I think anything to help the community is great. I know I have been thinking about starting a grassroots social group, but it requires me being out fully, and I am a few weeks out from that. I think finding a way to link with doctors in the area and increasing education will be key.

Thanks @AmberM and @Shay for these, but I really need them to fill in the form to Submit a Transgender Friendly Practice so I have it confirmed that I have permission to use their details.

When I looked for a family counselor I was able to find ours through psychology today web site. They list if a therapist is LGBTQ friendly , and does work with transgender patients.

@KymmieL thank you. I forgot to mention the Psychology Today is a great website to find counsellors or therapists. At least with the advent of zoom the difficulty of those who aren't near bigger cities can find help and many will provide services that way.
