What about the kids?

One of the things that concerns me most is coming out to my kids.  They are still younger and I’m just not sure when or how to let them know dad will always be their dad but is actually a woman. I worry about them all the time so this is an extension of that.  I’d love to hear how others let their kids know.

This comes up a lot. However, the kids are usually more understanding than the adults. The environment they grew up in is NOT the environment you and I did (I checked, you're only six years younger than I am). A lot of the transphobia that society had back in the 80s and 90s just doesn't exist anymore for kids. That's a good thing.

 

I can tell you that my niece and nephew were both fine with it. They accept me and love their aunt Robyn. I think if you're open and honest with your kids, they'll love you just the same.

No issue whatsoever with my teenage sons. They took it in stride. I thought they'd make at least some questions, and there wasn't even much of that. It was... "ok. So now what do we call you?"

It's true that it would probably would be different with girls. The same basic acceptance but with a lot more talking involved.

What the kids need to know is that you'll be there for them just the same. As long as they know that, they are ok.

My kids are grown, it was a mixed bag, but basically okay with it.   Grandkids are unfazed.
