Practicing My New Voice On The Phone

I've been working on my voice for about 3 1/2 months with the Deep Stealth exercises and just got up the courage to start practicing with people on the phone last week. Random calls to restaurants, business and theaters asking for reservation information, checking to see if they have a product I'm looking for and checking on movie times and schedules. Just starting out, it's a fantastic way to get real life practice.

I was scared to death on the first call. After a sentence, I cleared my throat and retreated to the safety of my guy voice. The only good thing was I knew it was never going to be that hard ever again.

I made a few calls a couple days later and it didn't go to bad. I'm not sure whether the people I spoke to thought I was a guy or a girl, but at least I was able to get myself to carry out the whole conversations with my new voice. I was off today and made a couple more calls. I'm still floating; two of the guys I spoke to actually called me Maaam :)

I've been using my voice recorder so I can play back the conversations to see how I'm doing. My therapist offered to me a nonjudgmental listener whenever I wanted. I'm going to try to make a call a day so I will be ready to actually talk to someone face to face when I see her in three weeks.

I'm absolutely amazed at how quickly I am gaining confidence in my new voice. A week ago I was petrified and now it's fun. Being recognized as a female, even if it's only by my voice to a stranger on the phone is an amazing feeling!

I have attached a short sample from one of phone calls. I think I sound kind of husky, but being 5 foot 11 and 48 years old, I think it kind of suits me. At least it's a voice I can repeat and I'm comfortable with. So, be honest but gentle. What do you all think?

Oh my!

That wasn't what I expected at ALL!

Husky????

Lol...that was GREAT!..If I talked to you on the phone I'd have to say female for certain!

BRAVO! Sweetheart! BRAVO!

Honestly?

You don't sound male AT ALL. A little... interesting sounding, but in a way that I think would go away with practice, and still completely female.

Donna Jean & CharlieRose, thank you so much for your kind words and taking the time to listen! CharlieRose, I think what you described as "interesting sounding" is what I called "husky." (scrunching my nose) It sounds kind of nasally to me. Maybe it's the beginning of my southern bell accent :) I hope it softens as I start to use my voice in real life instead of singing and saying the Deep Stealth Ayah's & GeeGoo's and The Rainbow Passage over and over. I guess as long as I don't sound like Rocky or Mickey Mouse, I'm making progress.

It's all so scary now that I am starting to dip my toe in the water and am beginning to put myself out there. I think what I have read about transition being like becoming an adolescent all over again is so true. On top of a the fears that go along with being a transsexual, there is the whole struggle of finding your identity that goes along with starting our lives as women just like if we were a teenager girl. It's all so overwhelming but thrilling!

Keep dipping that toe, Sweetheart....It IS like being a 14 year old girl...my wife tells me that all of the time! You are doing wonderful with the voice...keep that up!

And all of the rest...well...there's lots to do....right? Are you on HRT yet?

You have a wonderful start...the voice will take you far!

It's definitely a female voice. I can't give a lot of advice, or critique or give any real constructive criticism, because like you said, you think that voice fits you and it definitely does sound female- however it's not in the same direction sound-wise as I'm going (or trying to go) so I guess I'd be kind of like an orange-taster trying to judge an apple recipe. Both awesome fruits, just different kinds.

But like I said, it definitely does sound female and there is almost no trace of male in it at all- it probably needs some practice and refinement but as I said it's not the same sound I'm personally going for so I don't know how much or how little work it needs.

Sounds amazingly female so far- so keep it up! You're definitely on your way to having an amazing full-time female voice!

Thank you, Donna Jean. I know that having a good voice is very important to being accepted as a woman and I have been working very hard on mine. It's an easy thing to do to within the limits of my guy mode. Finding time to practice my makeup is alot harder :)

I have been in therapy for just under two months. My therapist is treating me tenderly as I have been in such deep denial about my transsexuality. First she wanted me to come out to my wife before I started. I did that about a month ago. At my visit last week, my therapist said the decision to start HRT would be mine, she would just tell me if I wasn't ready. She said she would like my wife to attend a session before I do. I am ready to begin HRT, and my wife supports me. I've waited 48 years to get to this point, but I'm all for taking a few months to follow proper medical protocol with something as life altering and potentially dangerous as hormones.

Sally, Eth, LightNebula, thank you so much for your encouragement!

Can anyone help me put a finger on how I sound? An actress or celebrity? Not that I am trying to copy anyone, but it just might be easier for me to figure out what I am doing if I heard it in someone else's voice. Do I sound too young (I am 48)?

First of all, let me start by saying your voice is pretty amazing! :). How it sounds is great, and you like it (right?), too. Getting that voice is so wonderful... because you can hear yourself :).

,,, In your sample, though, you "uh" 'd a lot. I think it sounds more feminine to "um" rather than "uh". It may also be more feminine to "mm"... People also sound more feminine when they talk with more enthusiasm, and body (e.g. stereotypical gays, and teenage girls :P).

Friendly pointers... ^_^.

Wishing you easy nights, and peaceful days,

Jessica

You sound female to me, but like Charlie said, there's something 'interesting sounding' in it. I wouldn't classify it the interesting quality as male though. Are you trying hard to speak like that or is that more natural to you? If you're working very hard to sound like that, the 'interesting sounding' quality could be from the strain/tension in your voice from kind of forcing it like.

To be honest, it was difficult for me to understand what you were saying, but the voice sounded female.

Thank you for the feedback Pól! I spent the whole afternoon looking at frequency and spectrograph curves and think I may have figured out what's going on. The Deep Stealth exercises worked too well helping me learn to shift the position of my soft pallet. I've got a little more of pinched quality to my voice that gives it that nasally sound. I guess I have a little relearning to do :)

So an update from me.   Had my endo appointment last night. Went very well and they are sending 3 months supply of estrogen (estradoil patches) and the anti-androgens whilst my Dr gets a shared care agreement sorted out. So happy, should start HRT tomorrow!! Cost for the 3 month supply is £70 total for me, so not too bad. Not told my parents about this yet, but them being in spain, not sure they need to know yet.   Can't wait to start, just got to think about where to put the patches now and wait for the changes...

Good Morning    well it’s Friday for most, pay day for some.  For me it’s pay day but not Friday.  I work the same opening shift tomorrow.  I typically have Friday on Saturday and Monday on Tuesday.     @KymmieL it does sound like your shop has an issue and you are smack in the thick of it.  The new gal or guy often is.  We have an issue with new people not getting fully trained before being turned loose on customers.  Some struggle through it and some quit because of it.  I try to get them working with customers as quickly as I can but I stay right with them observing, helping, even jumping in when things are getting backed up to keep the stress down.  Not everything comes up during training so when things do, even later after trying is done, I try to help and explain.  Our ASM feels that once she has you scanning barcodes and taking money she is done training.  Generally, refuses to train me on things that she does, and questions why I’m doing something that she normally handles when I’ve been told to do it as part of my advancement training.     She and the cashier involved both keep trying to toss the manager under the bus over a hours of work issue and shifts.  I tell her I realize her issues and I’ll work what ever she needs.  Because of that I tend to get a better more consistent schedule.   Well, time to say Happy Trails to you, until we meet again.   Hi ho Silver, away   Willow

That does get you the 'starting point' for cup size, but manufacturers, style, breast shape, etc... will effect the results.    Step one is of course finding the proper band fit, then figuring out the approximate cup size with the calculations. Of course you need to try on a few styles after that in different cup sizes close to your measured result until you get the perfect fit.    I have bras in a DD that fit just like my bras in DDD both from Torrid but different styles.    I have some DDD's that fit awesome and some that are a bit loose, but I measure a 46G. It's not wonder that 80% of women are wearing them wrong bra.

I firmly believe I drank entirely to much for about 25 years. Got drunk every day. This was my coping mechanism to keep hiding deep inside that I was a woman. I miss a lot of signs over the years. Now I drink mabye 1 or 2 beers a day don't even get a buzz anymore. totally accept myself and on regret is that I hide that part of my self which  truly makes me happy being violet 💜. I wasted a lot of time before  being self destructive and had no clue I was just hiding th real me

Well it not morning and I haven’t been on her for a while but it’s nice to be back.  Did some catching up on everyone.  I do have a question, how is Toronto Canada for a get away? Is it a safe and friendly area for us to go.  The wife and I are looking for some where to go to allow me to be my true self.     thanks in advance

Hey, everyone. my life is going down the tubes. at least I think. So, today. A customer called about his car, I told him that the oil change was done. The parts to fix the check engine light are ordered. He can come and get it. For the weekend if he wants. Customer says I didn't want an oil change. it was check the engine light and check for an oil leak. Checking the work order says oil change. The boss wrote the vehicle up. checking with the customer on services wanted.   Being that I wrote down the appointment in the book. and clearly states oil leak. She is complaining because she can't read my small ish writing. It seems she read oil and assumed it as an oil change. It seems like she is blaming me.  She wound up going home because she was too upset. She is stressing about an eye problem she has, she has to get eye surgery it seems she has a tear in her eye.    I feel that I am short for this job. because of the BS they are blaming me on. Plus I am still upset about the trust issue. If either one of the bosses start their Shite tomorrow. I am walking out.

"I love you so much,"  Lois said.  They met in the driveway. "I could not live without you." "Neither could I." "What are we going to do?" "Find another counselor?" "No. I think we need to solve this ourselves." "Do you think we can?" "I don't know.  But what I know is that I don't want to go through that again.  I think we have to hope we can find a solution." "Otherwise, despair." "Yeah.   Truce?" "Okay,  truce." And they hugged.   "When we know what we want we can figure out how to get there."   That began six years of angry battles, with Odie insisted he could dress as he pleased and Lois insisting it did not please her at all.  He told her she was not going to control him and she replied that she still had rights as a wife to a husband. Neither was willing to give in, neither was willing to quit, and their heated arguments ended in hugs and more.   They went to a Crossdressers' Club, where they hoped to meet other couples with the same problems, the same conflicts, and the same answers, if anyone had any.  It took them four tries before they settled on a group that they were both willing to participate in.  This was four couples their own age, each with a cross dressing husband and a wife who was dealing with it.  They met monthly.  It was led by a 'mediator' who wanted people to express how they felt about the situation.  Odie and Lois, as newcomers, got the floor, and the meeting was finally dismissed at 1:30 in the morning - it was supposed to be over at 10 - and everyone knew how they felt about the situation.   There was silence in the car on the way home.   "We aren't the only ones dealing with this." Odie finally said.   "Who would have thought that?  You are right."   "Somebody out there has a solution." "I hope you are right."   "I hope in hope, not in despair."   "That's my Odie."

The counseling session was heated, if you could call it a counseling session.  Sometimes Lois felt he was on Odie's side, and sometimes on hers.  When he was on her side, Odie got defensive. She found herself being defensive when it seemed they were ganging up on each other.   "This is not working," Lois said angrily, and walked out.  "Never again. I want my husband back. Dr. Smith you are complicit in this."   "What?" said Odie.   The counselor looked at him.  "You will have to learn some listening skills."   "That is it? Listening skills?  You just destroyed my marriage, and you told me I need to learn listening skills?"   Dr. Smith said calmly,"I think you both need to cool off."   Odie looked at him and walked out, saying "And you call yourself a counselor."   "Wait a minute."   "No."
