A Lesson From Cookie Cutters

From time to time, I get requests to do Spoken Word monologues at Trans Events.  I did one three weeks ago at an event given by the Trans Lounge group at the L.A. LGBT Center which went over OK I thought, but Sunday I was at another group's holiday party where all I was really going to do was take some video recordings, and I had several people who had been at the first party come up and tell me how much they had enjoyed the monologue.  I do not have a large ego about doing the monologues and so it is very touching to me when someone comes up to me later and tells me those thing.  This is the script from the one I gave back them and I hope you can see my message in it.

A Lesson From Cookie Cutters

When I was a tiny child, my mother liked to bake holiday cookies. To me she had a ginormous collection of cookie cutters for just about every holiday.

When I was 5 she let me cut out the cookies for my first time. This was to have been for Christmas and Christmas Cookie cutters were what she wanted me to use, but I had grabbed cutters from every holiday.  Snowmen and trees, gingerbread men and women, and angels and witches and Easter bunnies.  My mother started to tell me we had to roll the dough back out and use just cutters for Christmas.  My Great Aunt who was over for the day told my mom to accept what I had done and bake the cookies I had cut out, they were my idea of Christmas Cookies and that I was right about what a holiday cookie should look like. They were all cookies and they would all be part of a holiday celebration, so even a witch, ghost or bunny was a Christmas Cookie.  All of the cookies were baked and happily eaten.

I am a Trans Woman and I may be the Christmas Witch and not an Angel although angels are supposed to be ENBY.  I am made from the same wholesome ingredients that others are, although some may be white sugar dough, some gingerbread or molasses dough, and other kinds of cookies to make people happy.  I will experience the heat of baking that all have as I come to know myself and what I must be in life. I may be dusted with powdered sugar, or with elaborate icing, candy sprinkles or just served plain, but I am one of the cookies just the same.  All of us no matter what we look like are wonderful celebrations of Trans and human life. Childlike imagination may know more than all the Traditional Wisdom of what a wonderful person should look like.  Just like I knew what a Christmas Cookie looked like back when I was 5.

Happy ALL-a-Days to every one!!

Thanks so much,@VickySGV.  Stories such as yours uplift, and illustrate how a childhood truth speaks to a wider audience many years later.  Nice!

Cheers from a refreshed
