I will have the surgery end of this year, what do I have to prepare besides the money which is required?

I found a useful list, but I would like to hear from you what you could suggest me?

Kind regards little-cherry

You need to have a consult with your surgeon if you have not done so already and see what they require, most have a packet they send you that states what their requirements are and when things need to be done and when.

My surgeon will be Dr. Mcginn, so the following is some of the things she requires or recommends.

Lose weight if you are overweight, many surgeons have a BMI requirement. Dr. Mcginn has an under BMI of 28 requirement.

Get in the best physical shape you can by doing cardio and strength training, it makes surgery an recovery easier. For the past 9 months i have been working with a personal trainer twice a week in addition to cardio.

Most except Suporn recommend genital electrolysis, this can take up to a year, so start early, i am doing laser since nobody in the area will do electrolysis down there.

Update your will if you have one if not get one, also a living will and a power of attorney, the power of attorney will make decisions if something should happen and you are unable to make your own decisions.

Each surgeon has a supplies list you need to get, start early and get a few at a time, non perishable items first then the rest close to your surgery.

If your surgeon does not have a recovery house make hotel reservations a few months in advance, the same with airline tickets, especially if it is close to a holiday.

Depending on where you go to have surgery, some surgeons require someone to come with you, Dr. Mcginn will not discharge you if you do not have someone to pick you up, my stay will be about 2 weeks and a friend is going that has a consult for FFS while we are there.

Dr. Mcginn requires you to have a cell phone with you at all times in case you have an issue you need to talk to her about, i have her personal cell phone number in my phone already.

Brassard and Menard have been saying genital electrolysis is optional for well over 10 years now. Menard is now retired (mostly).

I recently read a statement from Dr Brassard that quite clearly advocated NOT having genital electrolysis. The gist of it is that they remove the folicles making it unnessary in the first place. More significantly if one has had genital electrolysis it is very difficult to identify folicles that have been made weaker but not destroyed. Thus regrowth is possible.

Oddly enough, when I first talked to Menard in 98 he said there was absolutely no need to have genital electro. At the time however his office was still sending out material recommending it. I think it pays to talk to the doctor. I am glad I didn't go through the expense or pain.

Their web site now states:

If you want a perfect hairfree vagina you need to be sure that no regrowth of hair has occured on the area for at least one year after you have finished electrolysis on laser. Even then this does not garant that no hair will ever grow.

The hair roots are either killed or weakened by electrolysis or laser. Those only weakered regrow. During surgery hair roots are killed with the cauthery on the scrotal skin that is used as a graft ( not on the « perineal flap » ) During surgery the hair roots that were weakered are less visible because they are much smaller than those found untreated areas and could be missed by the surgeon and regrow later.

For this reason, in our experience expeditive laser or electrolysis treatments are worse than not having hair removal at all. In fact, we can get most hair roots during surgery if they were not weakened. Regrowth after our surgery is possible but very sparse.

If you want no regrowth at all you will have to face hours of painstaking hair removal and a one year nonegrowth period. At this time we do not feel that hair removal is indicated.

That seems to be pretty clear message that they don't see it as needed.

others have covered the medical stuff, so I'll give some practical advice.

first, if you have someone who can be with you, who can visit - a souse, partner, family member, friend, ask them to come. It's major surgery and you will need all the support you can get.

Bring some books, music and if possible a portable DVD player or laptop with a DVD drive and some DVDs. You're going to spend the first 3 days after surgery (at least) on your back. Now, while 3 days of "bed rest" may sound nice, 3 days on your back, not being able to sit up, roll over or even get on your side can be quite trying and rather boring. Reading can be tough simply because your arms will get tired, but you should be able to get a table set up where you can watch DVDs to pass the time.

Do not plan on catching up on work, writing reports or reviewing paperwork. You'll be tired, sitting up will be difficult if not impossible and using a laptop will be hard.

Be nice to the nursing staff, they can make your time much more pleasant if you stay on their good side.
