Patti, I love Alan Parsons!  I Robot album is my fav.  Did you know that he engineered Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album?  I just learned that a few years ago.

Prog Rock is probably my favorite genre.  I grew up on Pink Floyd, Yes, and early Genesis (before they got "pop-py).  PT is new to me.  I watched the Steven Wilson video you posted; that's good stuff!!  Will have to check out PT.  Thanks for sharing that.

 

I've gotten heavily into World Music in the past few years thanks to an Azam Ali/Niyez concert I attended.  I guess it's classed as electronica but the effect is similar to Prog for me.

I watched that show for several years.  Those are pretty good guys up there.  Alaska State Troopers used to be fun, too.  I enjoy the insight into the culture of those remote places.

I’ve been listening to his new stuff nonstop since you mentioned his solo stuff @Sally Stone. Some of it is perfect for exercising and going on my long walks. My newest personal favorite is now...Personal Shopper.

I had no idea Tori. I'm not really surprised though. As an aside, I wonder how many pounds of weed were smoked in 1978 while listening to that LP? 

 

I think that when it's all said and done, Dark Side is probably the best, most innovative album ever. I wonder how long before Dark Side was recorded did Syd Barrett leave the band?

5 years.  From Wikipedia:

Barrett was musically active for less than ten years. With Pink Floyd, he recorded four singles, their debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), portions of their second album A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), and several unreleased songs. In April 1968, Barrett was ousted from the band amid speculation of mental illness and his excessive use of psychedelic drugs.

 

Those earliest compositions with Syd were very weird.  I've listened to them but only a few times. For 1973, Dark Side was way ahead of its time.  It was actually a couple/few years before it achieved mass appeal.  I discovered it in '77-'78 and probably contributed a couple of pounds to that weed consumption total, lol.  I only learned of the Parson's link in a documentary about 5 years ago.  I checked my EU quadraphonic vinyl disk and, sure enough, there was Alan's name.  Those people were, in my book (because it is debatable), the creators of Prog.

 

In the end, though, my most favorite Pink Floyd songs/albums became Echoes, from the Meddle album, the entire Animals album (loved the Animal Farm and anti-establishment allusions) and Momentary Lapse of Reason.  There are 3 PF songs that I think are just pure fun:  Grantchester Meadows (the irony at the end cracks me up!), Careful with that Ax Eugene, and Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict (possibly the longest song title in history, haha).  I guess most people know that Wish You were Here and The Wall were heartfelt tributes to Syd.

Yes early Floyd tunes penned by Barrett were over the top. That being said I have always enjoyed “See Emily Play”. 
On a side note, in 2013 I had a mental collapse and had to take a break from my band for several years. To their credit they didn’t replace me they just switched instruments to fill the hole. When I was well enough to continue I called my song writing partner in the band at his office to tell him I was ready to come back. His secretary asked who I was....”Just tell him Syd Barrett”. It became a standing joke. But now that I have crossed over he suggested I should introduce myself as Patti Smith.

Back in the 80’s I loved this one specific progressive instrumental song that I had recorded off the radio (anyone remember those days?). Back then, I accumulated a large music collection by recording full albums when my station would play an entire album uninterrupted on a particular evening. The collection is still on (84) two-hour cassettes so I haven’t listened to them in several years. I’ve managed to find digital copies of some of my favorites from the collection over the years with the exception of this one progressive instrumental that I really miss. I used to play this song over and over never remembering the name of the artist or song and only having the one version of it somewhere on these cassettes.  About 4-5 years ago, I spent an entire day trying to locate this song on my cassette library to no avail.

 

Tonight when looking for details for another post here, I found the movie trailer I was looking for to be used in the post. The trailer is for documentary Trans and when I replayed the trailer I noticed the intro music was part of this song I so loved way back in the 80’s. I used Shazam to locate the song title “Light Is Body by Motoko“ from the snippet used in that music intro. I found the full video on youtube but it turns out to be a later partial version of the song. It’s definitely about half of the original 9 minute original recorded back in circa 1982. There’s a lot of parts missing but maybe some of you music buffs have heard and remember the name of the full original version. I actually never thought I’d hear the song again so I’ll take what I can get.

I don't know the song but I LIKE it!  I can see why you played it over and over, @Susan R.  I just now tried searching the Amazon music library and Wikipedia with that title hoping to find a link back to the original but no luck.  There's quite a few Motoko songs available.  If you ever find it, I'd like a link.  I hear a lot of similar music in the "Chill" genre of the streaming channel I play much of the time.

 

How many people remember the King Biscuit Flower Hour?  I recorded dozens of cassette tapes of that and some other late night shows I've forgotten the names of.  I especially loved when they would play an unpublished concert.  All of those tapes were eventually eaten by various car stereos or played until they just wouldn't play any more over the years.  I even learned to splice them back together when they broke.  I wish I had them now.
