So here’s to a young adult that is making her own way in life, with no help.

That's great @Willow I know how proud you are, it's truly heart warming to know and meet these young people who aren't afraid of work. I've met so many young adults through the Fire & Police Academy classes I've taught in the past 24 years. I felt like I was the only one saying that our future is in good hands, because of these young adults were not only willing to work, they didn't let hard work scare them away.

Good morning everyone,:coffee:

It's a cool rainy day here in central Indiana. I placed and filled the bird feeders yesterday. This morning it's a cheerful chirping chorus, of bird songs as they announce the food is ready. I'm happy to see them, and the two cats are at the window ready to pounce.

I hope everyone is able to get through today, and believe in their tomorrow.

Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight, if you live in an area of the world that participates in Daylight Savings Time.

👩‍🚒No mater where you live in the world, today is a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detector. If you live in a building with hard wired smoke detectors.👩‍🚒 Purchase your own battery operated one, and place it in the hallway outside your bedroom doors.👩‍🚒

Hugs,

Good morning

no new coffee pictures today.  Really not much going on.  I made pizza dough yesterday.  Refrigerated half for another day.  I follow an Americas Test Kitchen recipe but it’s too big and I think it would be too yeasty if I halved it.  I guess I’ll see how the refrigerated dough holds up.

I got our bikes out yesterday.  I had some flats to fix but they are ready to inflate to full pressure and take a ride today.  Personally, I think I prefer our one generation older bikes.  These are “crank forward” design so the bicycle is longer but lower without sacrificing hip to pedal distance.  Easier to put your feet down when you stop.  My biggest issue with my wife’s is the seat is further from the handle bar so she has to reach for it.  Our other bikes are very different.  My wife’s is of a shorter hybrid design so she doesn’t reach for it but the compromise is it’s taller.  Either way she looses being 4’10”.  My older bike is a recumbent.  I bought it because I really liked it.  They also have issues in that you can’t use your upper body to push up a hill and of course you can’t stand up on the pedals. Here that doesn’t matter but being seen does.  My new one has a recumbent style seat and long handlebars so I don’t has to reach.  I also have attention grabbing lights high intensity flashers.  Safety first, eh @Mmindy.

Speaking of safety, I needed to replace the batteries in my AED and discovered Phillips now longer makes the battery for my unit.  I find that disturbing as I know that there are a large number of this design that are no longer of any value.  FR-2s.  I also learned that SC requires a prescription to get my O2 tank refilled.  I shouldn’t have an issue there.  I actually have two.  One needs refilled and the other does not.

We haven’t heard from our oldest granddaughter yet.  I am very proud of all three of my granddaughters.  The middle one is a sophomore.  She has always been the quiet one.  But as a sophomore she is captain of her high school color guard.  She had done hip hop, then ballet and now  this. She really enjoys it. She goes to a high school that is in a smaller size, but the band is so big it competes with big high schools at their meets.  150 band members.  It’s quite a difference to the next largest in her county.  The third is the one that died of cancer.  But before she died she had a Girl Scout sanctioned patch, had Girl Scouts from all over the world contacting her.  Was able to smile even though she knew she was dying.  In her short life she made a difference to thousands of people.

And I miss her every day.

Just because Phillips doesn't make the battery you need, doesn't mean it's not available. Give Batteries+ a chance to match one up for you.

As for Safety... I've always said, when it comes to business. Safety is second, profit is first. If you want to be the safest company on the road? Park all your trucks. It's Risk vs Benefit.

As well as checking with Batteries+ you might Google "[your battery size] alternatives" to see what is available.  I had to do that recently for an old battery and I found what I needed.

Thanks for the battery suggestions I’ll check again but it is a custom battery nothing about it is over the counter.  But I agree that doesn’t mean someone didn’t take over production.  I only have it in case either my wife or I should need it one day.  Originally, I had it as safety equipment while I was teaching scuba diving.  Same with the O2 systems. Specifically for scuba diving emergencies.  The regulator on the tank allows for two masks on constant flow plus a third specifically for demand breathing ie some one who is breathing on their own.

Went for s short bicycle ride today.  First time in a long time.  Unfortunately, I had to replace two inner tubes and now I know I’ll have to replace a tire.  It’s was one that sat flat for a couple years and now the bead keeps popping out of the rim.

@Willow, I have always had a fire ring in my backyard, and never understood why people only have campfires when they go camping. I burn more wood in the Summer and Fall outside, than I do in my wood stove during the Winter season.

Here in Arizona, we don't do the daylight savings time thing, but, I really appreciate the sentiment. Some days, the bucket is not enough and I've been told I should take my coffee intravenously. Lol.

Sunday morning a day to reflect!

yes I enjoyed a campfire.  I enjoyed a natural fireplace.  I can’t have either where I live now.  But that’s ok, I can always go to the state park if I need one that badly.

Today my eyes are leaking.  Too many things churning in my thoughts.  Our loss of Daphne still tops the list.  I’ll read a poem about loss of a loved one and it sets me off.  Others in my life who have gone before me have lingered in my thoughts but nothing like this.

I saw a Facebook post recently with elementary kids singing “We are the world”. There were thoughts written below the video.  Those kids singing and the thoughts someone added made me think of all the kids who are transgender and trying to live their lives in peace and harmony.  Because I help out with a teen group I hear their stories and see their perseverance.  Because the parents meet in the same place at the same time, but in a different room I often hear their struggles as well.

if we think this isn’t easy to retain our loved ones and be the person we are, just think of the struggles these kids are going through.  Often there are family members that are upset with them or don’t believe them.  There are definitely kids around them that tease and bully them.  A high percentage have to leave school and be home schooled or online schooled.  Many try to get into community college programs where they can be with others that don’t bother them to earn their high school diploma and get some college credit at the same time.  Life is especially difficult when one parents is trying to help and the other wants no part in it.  I see kids that have to hide from one or both parents.

So as you reflect on things in what ever manner you choose, please keep our young friends in your heart.  They are the ones who have the most to loose and the highest suicide rate.

hugs

Yes.

I don't worry so much for myself.  I'm already old and not likely to be here a whole lot longer.  But the kids have their whole lives ahead of them.  If they can transition early, it would help a lot.

As a morning person I never find Daylight Saving Time to be hard to adjust to when waking up, it's the staying awake in the evening part that gets me. Last night I was nodding off around 8 PM!

I don't like the changing part of it.  Since I'm retired I can make the change over a few days.

I wonder why businesses can't just adjust their hours to follow the seasons instead of pretending we can change time twice each year.

Keeping "time" is probably necessary, but still kinda arbitrary.

I'm going to the courthouse in awhile to submit my name change petition.  I already posted my "intent" 10 business days ago.

I'm worried something will still go wrong.

Oh well, maybe it will go through.  That would be really nice.

I'm firmly in the camp to stop changing like most of the world. I'm very sensitive to light when sleeping, get a bit less sleep for a while each time we change.

It is suggested Ben Franklin originally proposed the idea of time changing to conserve candles, not sure that is still an issue

Good morning all,

I woke up early today with great intentions of productivity. Got the coffee made and jumped right into dilating while enjoying my first cup. Got all cleaned up and finished my second. It's now 90 minutes later and my current situation: still curled up under covers dreaming of more coffee. lol

Today's project is to write a thank you speech for my Vaginabration party in 12 days. The party is a celebration of the medical journey's end but also a giant thank you to all the people who helped me along the way these last 2.5 years.  There's going to be a lot of tears while writing and I suspect a lot when giving it.

Also, I have to get back into work mode. lol

Morning has broken, the birds have all sung.  Now it’s time to get active, before the days done!

or something like that.  Hi, Monday day’s wash day.

I’ll never understand the point of daylight savings time.  No matter when you get up and start your work day, there is only so much daylight.  And that is dictated by the tilt of the Earth on its axis and it’s orbit around the sun.  What difference does it make whether is in the morning or the evening?  It’s certainly harder on our internal clocks to adjust to changing time than not.  Saving candles?  Saving electricity?  In our modern world, farmers don’t go by a clock and never have.  Factories work multiple shifts so it’s not saving much if any electricity.  Isn’t it time we stopped fooling ourselves into believing we are saving daylight by moving our clocks ahead and back?  What is time anyway?  It is simply a division of a period measured by speed and distance.  A man made measurement like so many others.  And while we are at it, why not time based on 10s? A metric day, hour minute, second?  Nothing says it has to be based on 24 and 60, does it?  Latitude and longitude lines can be redrawn, can’t they?  If we think we can change time for some advantage, then why not change time to be based on 10?  Doesn’t the world generally count by 10s?

Ok, philosophical rant over.

have a great day and don’t dwell on metric time, it will never happen.

LOL

I think the whole daylight savings time thing goes back to WW2. (One of those weird facts you pick up in life and can't forget.) Back then, the Brits did a thing called "Double Summer Time," essentially Daylight savings time but two hours, to save fuel for the war effort.

Honestly, Ivy, I agree with you about businesses adjusting their hours. Personally, I have trouble keeping track of the time differences with my east coast living daughter, because in AZ we don't have daylight savings time.

My understanding is there's a bipartisan bill to stop the time changes that's been making it's way through congress. I guess maybe that's been attempted before, but it seems to have better support this time. It wasn't able to work its way through quick enough to help us this year, but fingers crossed for next year...

I wish it would be Daylight Saving Time permanently.  It is ridiculous to have evenings be so dark in the winter.  I've heard a bunch of excuses for it, naming either farmers or school kids as the reason.  School kids rarely walk to school anymore, unless they live really close by.  Full time farmers tend to be able to work when it is light, whatever the time.  Part-time farmers who work during the day need evening light to work, and at least in my part of the nation there's still some farm cleanup stuff to do in the fields in November.

My husband gets irritated in the winter...he goes to work early and leaves home in the dark.  In the evening, he returns in the dark (or very near to it.)  Having an hour of light in the evening would be nice.

Afternoon @Heather Nicole and @awkward-yet-sweet yes I have heard the same that there is a bipartisan bill which has been passed by the senate if I recall correctly.  And I believe the bill keeps daylight savings time year round.

I don’t like it getting dark early either although it only lasts for 6 weeks maybe 8.  As someone who was involved in a lot of international business, I can tell you it gets very confusing when some countries change while others don’t or Southern Hemisphere countries switch opposite directions and there is a two hour change.  Honestly I think we should all just stick to the standard time system that became standard throughout the world.  What gives us the right to decide there are 6 time zones or longitudinal divisions between Greenwich England and the east cost instead of 5?  We would have to move the American continent 1/24 of the diameter of the earth further away from Europe.

Yes I’m in favor of getting rid of time changes biannually I just think it should be to stick to standard time, not daylight savings which doesn’t save anything.  There are still the same number of hours of daylight.

Let’s hope congress can actually agree on something for a change.

Wow.  I'm exhausted but happy.   I have my court ordered name change!  It turned into a royal mess up, but is now a done deal.

There was a form that was never mentioned on the "official" website, that the clerk of court insisted I submit.  Everything else was in order.  And the info on this form was the same as the other ones.  It was actually the court order - which I kinda expected they had to do.

Took most of the day.  Had to fill out a "interview" online, that was a duplicate of the petition I was already filing.  This one had that form included.  So I only printed out that part.  Now it was fine.

The clerk did the paperwork while I waited.

I am now officially Ivy!

I was thinking in particular of BLM, who years ago had a 'What We Believe' section that sounded like they were at war with the nuclear family.   I tried to find it. Nope.  Of interest https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/aug/28/ask-politifact-does-black-lives-matter-aim-destroy/   My time is limited and I will try to answer as I can.

Well, I suppose it is possible that they don't actually plan on doing what they say.  I'm not too sure I want to take that chance.  But I kinda expect to find out.  Yet, perhaps you're right and it's all just talk.  And anyway, my state GOP is giving me enough to worry about anyway. I remember a time when being "woke" just meant you were paying attention.  Now it means you are the antichrist. I just don't want the government "protecting" me from my personal "delusions."
    • MaeBe
      1.  I think there are some legitimate concern.   2. Thoroughly discussing this will consume many threads.   3. I disagree partially with @MaeBe but there is partial agreement.   4. The context includes what is happening in society that the authors are observing.  It is not an isolated document.   The observation is through a certain lens, because people do things differently doesn't mean they're doing it wrong. Honestly, a lot of the conservative rhetoric is morphing desires of people to be treated with respect and social equity to be tantamount to the absolution of the family, heterosexuality, etc. Also, being quiet and trying to blend in doesn't change anything. Show me a social change that benefits a minority or marginalized group that didn't need to be loud.   5. Trump, if elected, is as likely to spend his energies going after political opponents as he is to implementing something like this.   Trump will appoint people to do this, like Roger Severino (who was appointed before, who has a record of anti-LGBTQ+ actions), he need not do anything beyond this. His people are ready to push this agenda forward. While the conservative right rails about bureaucracy, they intend to weaponize it. There is no question. They don't want to simplify government, they simply want to fire everyone and bring in conservative "warriors" (their rhetoric). Does America survive 4 year cycles of purge/cronyism?   6. I reject critical theory, which is based on Marxism.  Marxism has never worked and never will.  Critical theory has problems which would need time to go into, which I do not have.   OK, but this seems like every other time CRT comes up with conservatives...completely out of the blue. I think it's reference is mostly just to spark outrage from the base. Definitely food thought for a different thread, though.   7. There are groups who have declared war on the nuclear family as problematically patriarchal, and a lot of other terms. They are easy to find on the internet.  This document is reacting to that (see #4 above).   What is the war on the nuclear family? I searched online and couldn't find much other than reasons why people aren't getting married as much or having kids (that wasn't a propaganda from Heritage or opinions pieces from the right that paint with really broad strokes). Easy things to see: the upward mobility and agency of women, the massive cost of rearing children, general negative attitudes about the future, male insecurity, etc. None of this equates to a war on the nuclear family, but I guess if you look at it as "men should be breadwinners and women must get married for financial support and extend the male family line (and to promote "National Greatness") I could see the decline of marriage as a sign of the collapse of a titled system and, if I was a beneficiary of that system or believe that to NOT be tilted, be aggrieved.   8.  Much of this would have to be legislated, and this is a policy documented.  Implementation would  be most likely different, but that does not mean criticism is unwarranted.   "It might be different if you just give it a chance", unlike all the other legislation that's out there targeting LGBTQ+ from the right, these are going to be different? First it will be trans rights, then it will be gay marriage, and then what? Women's suffrage?   I get it, we may have different compasses, but it's not hard to see that there's no place for queer people in the conservative worldview. There seems to be a consistent insistence that "America was and is no longer Great", as if the 1950s were the pinnacle of society, completely ignoring how great America still is and can continue to be--without having to regress society to the low standards of its patriarchal yesteryears.

Cadillac parts are pretty expensive, so repairing them costs more.  But they don't seem to break down more than other makes.  Lots of Lincoln models use Ford cars as a base, so you can get parts that aren't much more expensive.    My family has had good luck with "Panther platform" cars.  Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Marquis, Lincoln Towncar or Continental.  4.6 V8 and 5.0 V8.  Reasonable fuel economy, and fairly durable.  Our county sheriff's office was running Chargers and SUV's for a while, but has gone back to older Crown Victorias for ease of maintenance.  GF rebuilds them here.  But they are getting more scarce, since the newest ones were made in 2011.    1992-1997 years were different than the later years.  1998-2001 they did some changes, and apparently the best years are 2003 to 2011.  Check Craigslist, and also government auctions.  GF has gotten a lot of them at auction, and they can be had in rough-but-running shape for around $1,000.  Ones in great shape can be found in the $5,000+ range.  Good for 200,000 miles without significant rebuilding.  Go through engine and transmission and electrical systems, and they go half a million.    Some Chrysler models are OK.  The 300 mostly has the same engines as the Charger and Challenger, so parts availability is pretty good.  But they tend to get timing issues.  The older Chrysler Sebring convertibles were pretty reliable, sometimes going 200,000 miles without tons of problems, although after that they were pretty much worn out.

I think I have read everything the Southern Baptists have to say on transgender, and it helped convince me they are dead wrong on these issues.  They can be nice people.  I would never join an SBC church.

You come across as a thoughtful, sweet, interesting and pleasant person.    There are parts of this country, and more so the world, where evangelicals experience a great deal of finger wagging.
    • awkward-yet-sweet
It has been an interesting experience being in a marriage in a Christian faith community, yet being intersex/trans.  I stay pretty quiet, and most have kind of accepted that I'm just the strange, harmless exception.  "Oh, that's just Jen.  Jen is...different."  I define success as being a person most folks just overlook.
    • awkward-yet-sweet
Well, I live in an area with a lot of Southern Baptists, Evangelicals, etc...  We've experienced our share of finger-wagging, as the "standard interpretation" of Scripture in the USA is that the Bible only approves of "one man, one woman" marriage.  My faith community is mostly accepted here, but that has taken time and effort.  It can be tough at times to continue to engage with culture and the broader population, and avoid the temptation to huddle up behind walls like a cult.    Tolerance only goes so far.  At one point, my husband was asked to run for sheriff.  He declined, partly because an elected official with four wives would have a REALLY tough time.  (Of course, making way less than his current salary wasn't an option either).
    • Abigail Genevieve
My bone structure is far more female than male.  I can't throw like a guy, which has been observed by guys numerous times, and moving like a woman is more natural.  It just is.  I'm not going out of my way to act in a fem. way, as you say, but I am letting go of some of the 'I am not going to move like that because I am a guy' stuff I have defensively developed.  The other breaks through anyway - there were numerous looks from people at work when I would use gestures that are forbidden to men, or say something spontaneously no guy would ever say.   At one point, maybe a year or more ago, I said it was unfair for people to think they were dealing with a man when they were actually dealing with a woman.    Girl here.  'What is a woman' is a topic for another day.

Mom, I’m home!  What’s for lunch?   Leftover pizza .   ok.    Not exactly our conversation but there is truth in the answer.     @KymmieLsorry you are sick. Feel better soon.   Girl mode, boy mode no mode, not us. Nothing functional for either of us.   anyone here have or had a 10 year old (plus or minus) Caddy, Lincoln or Chrysler?  How was it?  Lots of repairs?  Comfortable seats? Anything positive or negative about it?  I need to replace my 2004 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer, it’s eating $100 dollar bills and needs a couple of thousand dollars worth of work and that doesn’t even fix the check engine code.  Obviously, it isn’t worth putting that kind of money into a 20 year old car with a 174 thousand miles.   Willow

I think you mean the worst possible interpretation of 2025 situation.  Keep in mind that there are those who will distort and downright lie about anything coming from conservatives - I have seen it time and time again.  It's one of the reasons I want to read the thing slowly and carefully.  They want you to be very, very afraid.
    • Abigail Genevieve
Here is where the expectation is that the stereotypical evangelical comes in finger wagging, disapproving and condemning.    Not gonna do that.   You have to work these things out.  Transgender issues put a whole different spin on everything and God understands what we are going through. I have enough trouble over here.  :)
